It was a night some of the kids will always remember, as on Tuesday evening January 26, awards were handed out for basketball and wrestling. During the past nine weeks the students have been participating in various sports. The boys were wrest ling while the girls took to the Maple courts for basketball. This was a very good year for the young athletes who have acclaimed an award outstanding for any school throughout the country as the Madras Junior High was voted the outstanding group of kids with high spirits in sports in Central Oregon, and were presented with a trophy for good sportsmanship con duct and away from competition. MJH sports director, Ms. Wink ler, who accepted the trophy said that it was great thrill to receive the award ahead of all the schools in Central Oregon. One of the biggest satisfactions is that she is the only female athletic director in central Oregon. For the a wards the first group of kids to be acknowledged were the Inter-mural basketball teams who were coached by Stan Williams and M rs. Zistcl. This was Mrs. Zis tcl's first year with the program and her team came out the winner over the team coached by Mr. Wil liams. Mrs. Zistcl coached the blue team while Mr. Williams had the gold team. In this program the kids have a chance to improve their skills in basketball. It has been proven in the past that some kids with just intra-mural basketball background in Jr. high, by the time they are Jr's and Sr's they are play ing varsity ball. Mr. John Scheideman who was assisted by Roy Gould, with the wrestling program presented awards to 38 boys who were on the wres tling team. At the end of the season some went on to participate in the district tournamentand done pretty well. Starting with the lowest weight and on up, at 70 lbs. Loren Dunten, 75 lbs. For coach Dave Jordan, his 8th grade team went through two unde feated seasons and compiled a 19 win and 0 loss record. It would have been 20 wins but one game was cancelled because of bad weather. This year they had 10 wins and 0 losses, in doing so they beat Cascade White of Bend 43-29; Obsidian 46 12; Pilot Butte White 32-178; Cas cade Red of Bend 39-24; Prineville 34-2 1 ; Sisters 41-10; Cascade White Bend 34-16; Obsidian Red 31-19; Pilot Butte Green 28-21; Obsidian White 42-12. The opponents aver aged 18.1 points per game to 37 for the Madras Jr. Buffs. The team members include Margie Durette, Arlinda Duff, Michelle Simmelink, Karla Jones, Becky Dodson, Nykki Werner, Shirley Allen, Daphne Tin gle, Mandy Fine, Jennifer Sennaeve, Kim Buslach, Luanne Foltz and Laura Sahme.
