education to Indians and for other purposes. The Act sought to let
the contemporary Indian chart his future through organizations of
his own.
The organization to be run by a Tribal Council, elected by the
tribal members. The Council to handle all business of the Tribes. If
we had not accepted this act of self-government, today we would
have to call general council meetings to make decisions of the day

We must be prepared to preserve all these rights and not let them
be taken away. Our younger generations should be aware of these
rights and be ready to protect them in the future. There will be a lot

Experience
To the Editor,
I would like to thank the follow
ing people for the support, love
and belief they gave me while I was
preparing to compete in the Miss
Indian USA pageant in Washing
ton. D.C.. Thank you Gladys Grant,
Coast to Coast. The Stag Restau
rant, Mexico City Restaurant,
Ahern's Stop and Shop, Grandma
Moffy's, Northwest Trading Com
pany, Thrifty Rexall Drugs, Mickey
Brunoe Company, Robert Finch,
Pat and Wissie Smith and Sentry
Erickson's Market.
The experience of competing in
the National pageant was very
rewarding. Being in the company
of 29 beautiful young ladies not
only in appearances but beauty of
spirit-made me feel fortunate to
contribute to the atmosphere of
loving and sharing of friendship
and not one of competition. Each
brought a part of their home and
culture with them. I was selected as
a semi-finalist out of 30 contestants
and it left me with a feeling that
whatever I want I can get. Every
young lady who participated in the
pageant was a winner just for being
there.
Upon returning to Warm Springs
I felt it only proper to share the
wonderful experience with whoever
would listen, especially the young
ladies in Warm Springs. I shared
my experience with young ladies to
let them know anything is possible
if you want it and are willing to
We need people
To the People,
I would like to share my feelings
about the addiction of alcoholism
and drugs. I am currently here at
Serenity Lane learning about myself
and alcohol and drugs. I have
learned about addiction and how it
can control your life. I look back
and see how many lives it has
taken. It seems nobody likes to
reach out to help a person with the
problem of alcohol and drugs. What
we need is people helping other
people with the problem so we can
solve the problem. It's taking our
loved ones away from us and we
don't need the hurt and the pain
that it is inflicting upon us.
It hurts me to see people pass on
because of alcohol and drugs. I
realize, after being here, that you're
not only hurting yourself but the
people who love and care for you. I
just hope people will start to reach
out and help their loved ones,
friends and themselves so they don't
have to go through the pain and
hurt of losing a loved one.
I would also like to say that I
consider the people here at Seren
kind words and the instruction in
regards to saving your life. And I'm
also sure, that you are waiting for
someone to come along, to put
their arms around you and show
you the way!
Nothing is more comforting to a
devestated soul, than for someone
to "show you" their love. We all
need someone to greet us, and send
us on our way in this world, every
day! If we go to counseling once a
week, what holds us up for the
other six days.
Long ago, among the Indian
people, when someone had trou
bles in their life, everyone knew
that it was a spiritual problem, and
the solution was sought after in a
spiritual way. Today, when some
one is troubled, they get sent to a
counselor or therapist. Even our
churches, who are supposed to be
spiritual, send them away! They
have become referral agencies with
little time for troubles.
But my brother and sister, there
are a few individuals in this com-
reserves the right to
of competing proved rewarding
sweat a little lor it. Do not put
limitations on yourself, be proud
of yourself, your home and your
people. I also shared a video recorded
at the pageant by Pat Smith. It
showed different portions of the
pageant. I also snowed a photo
display. At the end of my presenta
tion I had a time for questions and
answers.
The purpose of the presentations
was to motivate young ladies to
feel better about themselves and
where they are from. I encouraged
Member concerned about road conditions
To the Editor,
I am writing this letter concern
ing the lack of snow removal from
the roads in the Simnasho area
during the weekend of Jan. 9-I2.
The people who were traveling to
Simnasho to attend the funeral
found the roads very difficult to
drive. There were several cars that
had slid off the road but luckily
there were some young men with
four wheelers assisting those who
were stuck.
Telephone calls were made to
the responsible people and here are
their actions: Superintendent
(twice) Sunday a.m. said "I'll
check into it." Cecil Seyler, Sunday
noon-said "1 11 call someone". Warm
Springs Police(twice), Sunday evening-dispatched

hurting myself and the people who
care and love me alot. It was a big
step to take but I couldn't see
myself hurting anymore.
I just hope some of the teenagers
will learn about alcohol and drugs
and how it can destroy a life. We
can avoid that by teaching them
early because they can have a future
to look forward to. So please help
them who help themselves and we
will have a brighter future to look
forward to. I am glad to be here at
Serenity Lane today.
Thank you,
Waldon Winishut

munity, who know you are very
valuable and important, and they
will put their arms around you, and
seek your restoration through the
spirit of claiming that there is an
Indian god, and a white man God,
for a real Indian, born from the
dust of mother earth, knows with
out a doubt, that there is but one
God, who created all men, and who
reigns over all of Creation. Look
for the truth in people, not in what
they appear to be.
If you see no purpose in your
life, turn to God the Creator, who
heals all men, and who hears all
you ask.
Let us become a living expres
sion of love for one another, every
where we go, every time we do
anything together. There will be
many who will resist your attempt
to care for them, but don't quit.
Help everyone understand, that
they are a very important part of all
things. If you don't know anyone
who is willing to give up their time
so that you may live, find out the
name of someone who will. There
are many people today who will
pray for you all the night through,
and who will stay with you until
you are strong enough to walk by
yourself again.
I'm asking you to return to the
ways of your grandparents because
they know who the enemy was. and
how he worked, and most of all.
they know how to drive him out of
your life. It doesnt matter whether
the enemy isaround you or in you.
he still can be driven out of your
life.

just enter and enjoy being a part of
the pageant. They should all take
advantage of every opportunity that

proud they are of where they are
from their people will be proud of

Again I would like to thank all
the people who supported and
befriended me. These are the peo
ple who gave me the opportunity to
