another. There are all kinds of ways we can celebrate. From these
good times a person will always have happy memories to fall back
on.
During the year of 1987, as we reflect back for the past 12
months, it wasn't the best year ever, but there are a lot of events
that are worth the effort not to forget. We here at Spilyay Tymoo
try to do the best we can in presenting the happy times of events
that happen around here. We want to feel just as much a part of
what takes place around here as can, as in the past we have covered
as much of the celebrations as we can even if its a small wedding up
to the Pi-Ume-Sha days. We try to have as many local faces in the
news as possible. There are times when we couldn't cover some
functions in the past and I apologize for those times.
So, now a year is upon us once again and we must make all of
those New Years resolutions, keep our nose straight and hope for
the best, because no one knows what these next 12 months will
bring. This is just a message to wish every one a Happy New Year.

Time waits for no one, it just
moves and on and on. The only
thing a person can do is cling on
to the memories of the past.
There are all kinds of memories
that we want to never forget...
some may be sad. some may be
bad, and there are the happy
times we don't ever want to
forget.
Here in Warm Springs, dur
ing the year we've all experienced
both sad and happy times. We
have all shared the sadness of
lost loved ones, but these are
things we can't do anything
about, because as time passes
we all have to face that time.. .the
end of the trail so-to-speak. But
for the present we should all
share the happiness with one
trading and showing.

strictly a volunteer show. She is
looking for community people who
would be interested in assisting as

other students in the class and the
learning that goes on."

Shadow life of community
often behind closed doors
To the Editor,
How is life in Warm Springs?
Did you know that it is estimated
that six out of every ten adults on
the reservation are affected by some
form of addiction to alcohol, ille
gal drugs or prescription drugs?
Even if it was five out of ten, that
would mean that cut of 1 ,500 adults,
there would be 750 people who are
not in control of their lives. The
future of Warm Springs is the
children. It is estimated that five
out often children use alcohol. So,
for adults and children, that is
1,500 out of 3,000 who are not in
control and it is estimated that
another two out of ten are on the
line. That leaves 900 folks, men,
women and children, who can social
drink, are too young or just don't
drink. That means 900 versus 2,100;
something to think about for the
future of Warm Springs.
For me, the future is today. Let
me explain I have just begun to
volunteer with the Fire and Safety
ambulance crew. In this short time,
I have experienced one of the
shadows of lives in Warm Springs.

Colleen
It is a life that is, for the most part,
confined to the inside of homes. As
I walk into a home carrying a med
ical kit or oxygen tank, I have seen
the shadow by the beer cans or the
people who sit and watch, still
drinking from their cans, as the
ambulance crew rushes in. It is
these people, under the care of the
trained EMTs, who insist they only
drank a "couple" of beers. The
shadow has caused them to be vic
tims of violence, accidents or self
triggered illnesses of their hearts or
diabetes.
I commend the keep in prayer
the men and women who, at times,
must step into this life. The EMTs
and police are the ones who go and
seek the victims, and who, at times,
must stop others from hurting
themselves. They must protect the
victim from others and are some
times required to protect themselves
while giving aid to the victim. This
is one of the shadows in the lives of
Warm Springs. Let us pray for the
life and the future of Warm Springs.
