PAGE 4 July 3, 1987 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tvmoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA: (The way it is) Letters to the Editor "Spifyay Spoob" Second series of parenting sessions offered Legislators passed the 65 MPH here in Oregon, but it won't become effective until 90 days after it was passed. Whats the big deal? All the time this issue was in debate, some legislators wanted to retain the 55 mph, why? Unless it is just a vote get ter for these legislators. Now the 65 mph will soon become effective what good will it do the people in the central part of the state? Or, are we still the people of no-where land? Why don't these legislators drive 55 mph around some of these areas where a person never meets another car for miles and miles. Some legislators say that increas ing the speed limit would cause more traffic deaths. No matter what the speed limit is there are those wreckless people who will kill themselves anyway, whether it be 55 or 85 mph or whatever. At the present time what is the speed limit between Portland and Salem? Between Salem and Eugene? Even now, if a person drives 55 mph between Portland and Salem he is a road hazzard and holding up traffic. Everyone else is going 70 mph plus, perhaps trying to get to the Capitol Building for the next session to pass the bill to raise the speed limit to 65 mph on inter-state freeways. They say the State Police Force is so low that they cannot patrol all the highways in Oregon. It's because they are posted out in rural areas of Oregon seeing that the Cowboys and Indians are not breaking the speed limit. , .... )",('.: !)M -S1 ii' ';)-! ii-i.rf rv ).i -V, !- i .'if,! They were the rejects after the coaches fin ished with the draft and all of the "so-called bigger and better" play ers had been selected. The coaches had left 19 heart broken kids standing with their heads hanging in rejection. So, I asked them if they wanted to play ball. They all became excited and gave one answer, yes. I told them the name of their team was "The Rat-Pac." In the beginning we were not even put on the league schedule, but thanks to some of the t-ball coaches, they managed to squeeze our team into their practice sche- dule. The kids were young but enthusiastic. They were willing to learn and they caught on to the game quickly. The team ended the season with a record of 4-4, which was just the beginning for The Rat Pac. It was a just matter of patience and taking the time to teach and coach the players about the game and discipline. The team is now noted as power in the t-ball league. It gives the players something to have pride in. The past records give the full story; 1983-4 wins 4 losses; 1984-8 wins 1 loss; 1985-9 wins 0 losses; 1986-8 wins 1 loss; and this year 1987-9 wins 1 loss. The players are at a age which makes them want to learn and they are fantastic to work with. In my books, there is no such thing as a dumb or stupid player. Some are a little slower then others in catching on or they are not inter ested in the game at the time. Some kids have other interests at the time. Kids from five to eight years old are willing and ready to learn but it is often up to the coaches and parents' to assist them in teaching the kids and to help them with what ever weaknesses they have. My coaching rules are simple and the parents and players are informed before the season sche dule starts. Rule 1 Monday through Thurs day the players are mine to coach and teach the game. (Friday through Sunday they belong to mom and dad). Rule 2. Discipline, at practice, games, home and school, I inform the players I need them to attend all practices and games, not at Continued on page 8 f -1? ktr ""Ms i 1 s V i 1 ":,'' ' .1"' ma t t 3 SpHymy Tymoo photo by Ltno-Bmkrr w6m Ml 9 j?P0(ii)g EVENTS 10 a.m. Parade, theme "Get It Toaether."
