Dental implants not a
by Dr. Michael Bell
Recently, there has been a great
deal of information being provided
to the public regarding Dental
Implants. Over the last couple of
weeks, I've had a number of indivi
duals ask me about implants and if
that would be the right treatment
lor them. There appears to be a
great deal of confusion regarding
this type of treatment. F irst of all,
dental implants are not a panacea
for all people and their dental
problems. Most individuals who
are candidates for these various
treatment approaches, usually are
missing a large number of teeth.
Most are already into full or partial
dentures.
Approximately forty million
Americans are edentulous (missing
all theirteeth). Half of those people
have difficulty functioning with den
tures. With increased longevity and
consumer awareness, more patients
w ill seek viable solutions to denture
discomfort through implants.
Implants are a viable option, but
one should remember that with the
benefits there are always associated
some potential complications. The
questions you are probably asking
yourself, do these benefits possibly
outweigh the risks.
Some of these benefits include:
A. Restoration of the patients'
facial appearances.
B. Restoration of the patients'
ability to chew and speak properly.
C. Elimination of direct forces
on the gums which reduces the
potential for possible gum boils.
D. Improved placement and sta
bility of the appliance, which
increases the patients' confidence
and self-esteem.
Some of the possible complications

include:
A. Improper selection of the
patient who can or cannot be good
candidates for surgery.
I). Improper design of the
appliance to be used.
C. Infection.
D. Rejection of the implant.
Patients selected should be in
general good health, possess healthy
gums and should have adequate
bone to support the implant. Many
people arc unaware that one of the
primary considerations in the success
and longevity of the implant, is for
a meticulous daily routine of cleaning
by careful brushing. Without proper
home care, infection will begin and
the possibility for rejection of the
implant increases. Another conside
ration is length of post surgical
time. Often these cases can take as
long as six to eight months for
healing and determination of the
success of the implant. Costs can
be extremely high, based on the
type of implants and the type of
appliance fitted to that implant.
Another important point is the
definition of success. Many practitio
ners feel that success of the implant
is based on the length of time that
the implant stays in place. Three to
five years is considered a very success
ful treatment for that patient, for
the most part, many of the patients
will out live their implants by many
years.
Recent strides in implant dentistry
have moved implantology from the
realm of "last resort" to that of a
positive treatment alternative. This
reawakening has been fostered by
documented evidence that implants
can succeed if extreme care is taken
in selecting the proper patient, one
who can be a good candidate.
