A tip on punctuation Of all the punctuation marks, the comma is the one most fre quently misused. Many writers suf fer from "comma-itis" that is, they use unnecessary commas. Commas, like all punctuation marks, are for clarity. They should be used to make meaning clear to the reader. There are several rules for comma usage; the best rule is to use a comma only if it is necessary to make meaning clear. One use of the comma is to separate items in a series. The school colors are red, white, and blue. We ate cheese, boiled eggs, and pretzels. Some words just "go together" and don't need a comma. The wise little old lady. The uncomfortable old couch. The way to tell if a comma is needed in a series is to see whether and could be used between the items. You could say "red and white and blue" but not "wise and little and old lady." The first series need commas; the second set of descriptive words does not. If you would like to review other rules for commas or have other questions about grammar, stop by at the Adult Learning Center. The Center offers classes and individu alized instruction in English, math and reading. The Center also helps people prepare for their GED or work towards a high school diplo ma. Call the Center at 553-1428 for more information. A day is not really 24 hours long. It's exactly 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds. It is your respon sibility to give it back to the com munity." Billy Mills, the onlv American to win the Olympic 10,000 meter run spoke to Madras Jr. High students during their Culture Week activities October 13. He wished to instill in the students the idea that they can live their dreams. It is necessary, said Mills, to formulate a philosophy. It is impor tant that it be a philosophy of "dig nity, pride, character; past, present and future." Part of the philosophy, explained Mills, should include the acceptance of defeat and the ability to realize that defeat does not mean failure. "How you feel about your self based on this philosophy," is directly related to how you treat other people." Billy Mills. a Sioux Indian trained relentlessly to accomplish his goal. He surprired everyone during the Olympic games when he finished first in an upset victory. His life and dreams began long before that, though, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota w here he was orphaned at 12 years of age. With determination and stamina Mills attained a bachelor of science degree in Education from the University of Kansas and went on to train for his Olympic v ictory. He emphasizes, "It's alright to dream dreams." Other activities during Madras Jr. High Culture week included a fun run with Billy Mills and a reception in his honor held at Kah-ee-1 a. inter haw k perlormed for i for students in rock style and Robert Ryan from St. Joseph's Hospital, adolescent care unit in Vancouver, Washington, visited with students, talking to them about drugs and alcohol. An "Around the World Fashion Show" was held during the week as was Hispanic tradi tional dancing. Exchange students from Madras high school, also, visited students in their classrooms one day during the week. f"X ' r ?f x , v w Mm fi'Ji LL J AJ.
