Tom wins "What is he going to be like in another five years?" is a question a number of people in the world of rodeo are asking about eight-year-old Justin Tom. Justin is in his second year of actively participat ing in rodeos. During this 1986 sea son he traveled to 21 peewee and junior rodeos. He belonged to the Central Oregon Peewee Rodeo association, High Desert Peewee Rodeo association and the North west Rodeo association. In the Central Oregon and Northwest associations he was a strong con tender for the 1986 all-around cow boy titles. In the Central Oregon competition he won the title and the prized all-around saddle, which is presented to the winner. In the finals of the Northwest, a twist of the rules and regulations prevented him from bagging the saddle. Usually, in rodeo, the total points for every event are totaled and the person with the highest number of points wins. But in the Northwest the points of just three events were totaled. Justin lost that title and saddle by just two points. He is a strong contestant in bucking ponies, calf riding, goat tying, pole bending and barrel rac ing. In the past summer months he won more than enough buckles for his family. But he has also won ribbons, trophies and halters. His awards are hung in the living room at his parents Seekseequa home. This past season his family backed the young cowboy in the pursuit of his dreams and goals to win the all-around title. His father, Lee Tom, also fills in as the boy's coach, driver and sidekick. He is the person to keep Justin on time and ever-ready for the events. His mom, Cheryl, is Justin's book keeper. She keeps a running total of his points in each event and in each association. His little sister, Lianna, is one of his foremost fans. She cheers her brother on in all events. It is really a "family affair" for the Toms. Achievement boards show accomplishments The Community Center wishes to recognize the commitment of those keeping healthy through exer cise. Those accomplishments should also be recognized by the communi ty. For this reason achievement boards showing personal accomp lishment will be posted in the Com munity Center fitness room. Achieve ment boards will show accumulative number of strokes on rowing machine. "MO 1 All Around title What are the dreams for an eight-year-old who has won an all around title? Justin dreams of the day when he can make his living at rodcoing and be on his way to the National Finals held each year for the Professional Cowboys Associ ation. The dream, at times, has presented its problems. Just recently he told his teacher he was not wor ried about school because he was Squiemphen took the winning combination of her horse, D-Devel, to win the 1986 saddle and title. For a great number of cowboys and cowgirls the season of rodeos for 1986 is over and all that remains are the memories and buckles. But for C.R. Squiemphen it is time to prepare for the National Finals which will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, November 20-23.
