We know there are more veterans on the reserva tion who are eligible to join. We need your help to fight for vete ran's rights. We now have two veterans who need help and medical attention here in Warm Springs. Without our organization, they wouldn't have been able to make a serious contact with the Veterans Admin istration. We have both state and national contacts to represent them and help is on the way. You younger vets will need this help as time goes on. There are many older vets who are asking for this help for there are old war wound presenting health problems now. Also, your G.I. Bill of Rights are still in effect and we will gladly help with them. We also JOM looking The Tribal Education commit tee is looking for parents to join the Johnson O'Malley committee. Box C, Warm Springs, Oregon Abuse is touchy situation To All Concerned People: First of all I'd like to take the time to thank all the people who turned out for the community meet ing on Sexual Abuse concerns. And especially thank Shirley Sanders for putting it on and getting myself involved. I realize abuse as being a very touchy and delicate situation. Yet I personally feel that the opportun ity to talk about it, is certainly one of the roads to feeling better about oneself. And, I do speak from experience. For 20 years I had carried the guilt and shame of always thinking it was my fault. Yet, as I see abuse happening to children as young as three years old it saddens me to think these Arrows appreciate summer support To the Editor, The Warm Springs Arrows co ed softball team would like to express their gratitude to the many wonderful people who offered a helping hand in making for a fun and successful Softball season. With apologies to anyone I may omit, those who have donated time, energy, money, sale items, and the hospitality of their homes are: Gina Jackson, Sanders Heath, Yvonne Tapedo, Joy and Jolene Soto, Ar lene Tenorio, Gail Frank, Levi and Cindy Bobb, Larson and Pat Kala ma and their family who hosted the entire team on two separate wee kends. Dorothy Brown and all the other families in Hoopa who shared their homes and food with our Toe Ness There was thisguy who went to the employment office looking for a job. The only thing open was a caretaker of men patients in a mental hospital. The administrator said, "If you want this job, the only real requirement is that you be able to handle a group of men. You have to be on your toes because they seem to wander and get Iost."The guy said, "I can handle them." So he goes into the room and says, "OK, all nuts stand up." They all stood up. "OK, now all nuts sit down." They all sat down. . "Well," said the administrator, "you certainly have a way with these men. You're hired, but tonight you have to take them to the ballgame. That night..."OK, all nuts, stand up and follow me." They all stood up and followed him. "OK, all nuts take a seat in the bus." They all did and when they arrived at the ballpark, he gave the command, "OK, all nuts out of the bus."They all climbed out. "OK, all nuts follow me."They all followed. Deadline for accepting resumes will be on November 21, 1986. innocent children will continously have to deal with this for the rest of their lifetime. So what are we as community members going to do to ensure that our youth and their rights are being protected? Will we continue to turn our heads or sweep it under more carpets? Will we allow offenders to still walk the streets without appro priate consequences befitting the crime? And lastly, but just as impor tant. How much does politics affect how fair we are to one and all? And to all the people who work directly or indirectly with our youth and gave excuses of "my hands are tied, ""I was directed not to attend," "I was afraid of being called on the carpet," and others. I ask you to put yourself in these innocent team. And of course thanks to the players and their families who re mained patient and loyal and put up with the expense, practice, travel, fund raising and "benchtime." Through the help of these people we traveled to tournaments in Hoopa, California, Tacoma, Nis qually and Oakville, Washington. Our seven month old daughter, Kelli Rose Helton, has been hospi talized since June, 1986. She wasat St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. On July 20 she was transferred to Mt. View Hospital in Madras, then on August 20 she was taken to Providence child care center in Portland where she is at this time. Kelli got spinal meningitis, bac terial form. She suffered a severe case of seizures and had a massive stroke. Her progress and recovery has been slow but she is improving tremendously. The hearing is scheduled during a regular School Board meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m., on Mon day, October 27, 1 986, in the library at Warm Springs Elementary School. children's shoes and feel the hurt and fear they have to live with for the rest of their lives. Then pray for the strength to listen to parents, victims, and concerned community ' members in developing a plan' to maybe correct some wrongs. Our youth, who we say are "our leaders of tommorrow" certainly do deserve the best in whatever we can do to contribute to their well being. Then maybe their chances of becoming successful, confident adults will be greatly increased. And that certainly could be an asset to this community in more ways than we may realize. At that time there was a lengthly discussion on the need to honor her for her representation of the honorable, impartial and the traditional person she was. The resolution reads: Whereas, Alcohol and drug abuse has been a destructive force within the Warm Springs Reservation, and Whereas, It is important that Tribal Members be aware of the latest information regarding alco hol and drug laws within the State of Oregon, in order to carry out their responsibility as voters, and Whereas, The Tribal Council of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs has appointed the Warm Springs Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council to advise and recommend alcohol and drug policy, and Whereas, Both the Warm Springs Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council and the Governor's Council on Alcohol and Drug Programs have acknowledged that Ballot Measure No. 5, known as the "Marijuana Initiative," to be voted on in the State general election on November 4, 1986, threatens the general wel - '$ 1 HI Ml The Community Center clown has activities at the Center. 51,11'"! . , ' MV ;',,', t-'j it mv ml ! s V ) a i- . r - i , , l . Dates have not been Chili feed Friday A chili feed organized by the BufT Boosters is scheduled for Octo ber 24, 1986 at the Madras High School cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The prices are $2.00 per individual and $7.00 per family. The chili feed w as organized as a pre function to the Homecoming game. Proceeds are used toward extra curricular activities for high school and Jr. High school students. and being grandmas were provided for; to Caroline Cruz and Papo Cruz for being so helpful when we needed them the most and helping us when we had vehicle problems; to the Tribal Garage, Ken and crew who helped at a minute's notice fixing our vehicle, and making sure we were able to visit Kelli; Auntie Iris and Uncle Woody for checking on our children and our mother Etta to make sure they were okay. We also thank Auntie Margie and Wimpy for being there for us. our children and our babysitters when we needed them; Grandma Louise and Popeye for being so helpful when we needed them; Doc tor Crcclman, Nakamura, Manning fare of all Oregon residents, and Whereas, Both of theabove Coun cils have adopted positions which recommend against passage of Bal lot Measure No. 5, now therefore, Be It Resolved, By the Tribal Council of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon, pursuant to Article V, Section 1( I) of the Tribal Constitu tion & By-Laws, that the Tribal Counicl endorses the position of the above Councils and recommends that voters seriously consider vot ing against the passage of Ballot Measure No. 5. The Jefferson County School District 509-J also passed a resolu tion urging a no vote on ballot measure 5. It reads as follows: Whereas, the legalization of marijuana predictably increase the availability and use of marijuana to students of Jefferson County School District 509-J under the age of 18; Whereas, marijuana usage by students impedes memory, atten tion span, and motivation for stu dents, and; Whereas, Ballot Measure 5 on the November 4, 1 986, general elec tion would legalize the growing, ' f X been seen recently at various places in set. Eight coastal adventure trips are planned for five days. Robert joins another brother Mark Kevin Johnson, Jr., who is three years old. Maternal grandparents are Vickie and Leo Hellon, Warm Springs, and Chris Still of Madras, Oregon. His great grandmother is Henrietta Kalama Johnson Warm Springs and his great grandfather is Franco M. Martinez, Sr., Mad ras, Oregon.
