The young men and women sat among hun dreds of friends and relatives during an hour long program. The heat of the day made the gymnasium look alive as graduates and audience fanned themselves in the 101 degree temperature. Many graduates wore shorts and cooler clothing under robes rather than traditional dresses and slacks. After the processional of graduates an invocation was presented by Father Leo F. Weckerle. The Madras High choir then sang, fol lowed by a student address by both Penny Berman Smith and Aurel Surface. Guest speaker Terence OTJon nell, a researcher and writer for the Oregon Historical Society, encour aged graduates to begin immediately on acheving their goals. Self-managers given special privileges Self-managers are students who are responsible and are able to work and play without teacher supervision. Throughout the school year students who were able to achieve the level of self-managers were given special privileges inclu ding field trips and activities. Students could lose their self manager status but were given an opportunity to regain it within a week. Many students retained their self-manager position throughout the year. A special ceremony preceded presentation of diplomas to the 1986graduatingclass. Roscoe Links had been student body president of Madras High school in 1916. He had left school to help his father on the farm while many of his class mates joined the military that year. He never graduated. Because life is a teacher, school board members felt 91 year old Links had learned lessons deserving a high school diploma. As he sat through the remainder of the cere mony, Links read his newly acquired diploma word by word. Students, then, received their diplomas, each showing the serious ness of the event, and each beaming with pride.
