Self-managers learn through mini-courses

I'm writing to thank those commu
nity members who have contributed
their time to the students at Warm
Springs Elementary School through
their teaching the mini-courses
offered to our Self Managers.
The Self Managers Program is
directed at improving student beha
vior. It rewards those students who
demonstrate responsible or self ma
naging behavior. When a student
receives a self managers patch after
completing the application form,
wearing the patch indicates that
the wearer is a person who is able
to take care of themselves. They
don't need an adult to be constantly
Party planned
An Alcohol-free, drug-free party
is scheduled May 3 1 for all Madras
High School graduating seniors.
The party will be held at the Griffith
Park Athletic Club in Beaverton.
Busses will leave Madras High School
between 6 and 6:30 p.m. following
graduation and arrive at the club
between 9:30 and 10 p.m.
Manyactiviticsare planned, inclu
ding swimming, raquetball and a
casino and all kinds of prizes will
be given away. Some of the prizes
collected so far include fitness center
sessions, tanning visits, gift certifi
cates, a car, dual cassette players,

17 State Forestry Skills contest
held at Central Oregon Community
College in Bend. Madras completed
the competition in fourth place.

As an incentive designed to moti
vate students to earn their patch,
we have developed, along with a
great deal of help from Mrs. Nina
Rowe. mini-courses which only self
managers may attend. Many of
these courses are taught by commu
nity members who have expertise
in a specific area.
We at the school are very apprecia
tive of the efforts of the follow ing
people for the direct effect their
contribution of time and expertise
has had on school discipline through
their teaching a mini-course. Carolyn

Cost for the trip is $ 1 5 per st udent
and includes the use of all facilities
at the club, activities and food. The
$15 fee helps defray the cost of the
club rental and the busses. If a
student cannot afford the fee. the
parent's committee will make sure
the students' way is paid for.

gible for preschool a child must
turn three-years-old on or before
September I st-there will be no exceptions.-A
child must turn five-years
old by the same date for kindergar
ten. Income eligibility will determine
a child's preschool placement.
Children with special needs will be
placed in the most appropriate
setting based on identified needs
-and availability of services.
Placement in preschool this year
does not guarantee placement next
fall. Pre-registration is on a first
come, first-serve basis beginning at
the first scheduled physical immu
nization date. Slots are confirmed
when physicals, immunizations and
all registration forms are complete.
Income guidelines The Admini

families determines the 1986 Income

nity, is eligible for Head Start. A
tribal member family over the income
guidelines is eligible for tribal pre

COCC office seeking assistant
The Central Oregon Community
College Warm Springs center is
seeking a part-time clerical and
classroom assistant. Job is a 20
hour per week position with salary
set at $5.38 to $5.76 per hour plus
benefits. This is a 12 month per
year position beginning as soon as
possible. The position is grant
funded through 12-3 1-86 with inten
tion of refunding.
Requirements include a high school
education with at least one year of
office work experience. Must type
preschool placement
Start and I HS has resulted in schedu
ling two days to complete these
requirements, while reducing the
rush to the clinic and time spent for
both the clinic staff and parents.
Blood and urine samples (lab work)
will be taken by the I HS lab techni
cian and nurse on Wednesday, May
28th, while your child is at school.
This includes pre-kindergarten
children at the Tribal Preschool,
Head StarJ (part day) and Head
Start Day Care. Parents need not
be present for lab work. Parent
must be present at theacutal physical
on Tuesday, June 3rd, at the Com
