Claude Smith to Tribe Improved hatchery practices at Round Butte Fish Hatchery on the Deschutes River is providing an abundant return of both spring Chinook and summer steelhead for the Warm Springs Tribe Financed by Portland General Electric and manned by Oregon Fish and Wildlife personnel, Round Butte Fish Hatchery, built in 1972 as a mitigation facility, has developed a rearing program resulting in returns well above average in number for any hat chery. Returns, however, were not always so plentiful. Rearing methods through the years have been modified, finally resulting in the current successful hat chery program. Summer steelhead Until 1971 the outlook for retur ning summer steelhead was uncertain. A return of 7,000 in the 1974-75 run year indicates that correct steps were taken. The Tribe receives fish from the Pelton trap in excess of what is needed for the hatchery pro gram. From the 1984-85 run year the Tribe received 40 percent or 1,802 of the total. Spring Chinook The spring chinook hatchery program, started in 1968, met with repeated failures. It reached a low point in 1978 with the return of only 24 fish. Continuation of the spring chinook hatchery program was aided with brood fish donated by the Tribe. Between 59 and 154 fish were taken annually from the Sherar's Falls trap between the years 1977 and 1980. Efforts to improve hatchery practices for the rearing of spr ing chinook were intensified. Portland General Electric fund ed the Department of Fish and Wildlife Research and Develop ment Division to study spring chinook ecology and hatchery rearing. Hatchery practices were altered with the chilling of rear ing water from 50 F to 40 F for slower fish development and by moving smolts to the Pelton fish ladder allowing them extra time to grow. These changes "ap peared to make the difference in high yield returns," says PGE fish biologist Don Ratliff. Even after passing through sports, commercial and Indian fisheries the return of spring chinook totalled 1,649 with 1,054 of those going to the Tribe. That number is over a one-percent return according to Oregon Fish and Wildlife research biologist Brian Jonassen. Fall Chinook Although Round Butte Hat chery does not operate a fall chinook program, collected data indicates that these runs have been affected minimally by dam construction. Fall chinook rear further down the Oeschutes River, spawning there and leav ing at less than a year of age. Numbers have remained relatively constant at approx imately 405 in the 1984-85 run. 28.
