Setpoint theory may prevent weight loss
H ave you tried dieting again
and again w ithout success? Y ou
are n o t alone. N ow , researchers
are investigating the “setp o in t”
theory to try to explain why
people d ó n ’t always lose w eight
as they expect to.
T he theory is th a t o u r body
tries tó m aintain a particular
level of fat ju s t as it m aintains a
particular tem perature. The level
varies from person to person. It
has been described as the am ount
you norm ally weigh when you
aren ’t thinking ab o u t it . .
I f this th eo ry is true, trying to
lose weight by ju st cutting calo

pow er the setpoint.,
E ach tim e the fat level ' is
reduced below thè n atu ral set-
point, the body m akes internal
adjustm ents to resist the change
and Consèrve body fat.
O ne a d ju s tm e n t th e b o d y
m akes is to reduce the resting o r
basal m etabolic rate. This rate
is the am o u n t of energy the
body uses for m aintenance while
at rest. ,
In conditions of sem i-star
vation, w hich is the sam e as
being on a low -calorie diet, the
body will autom atically adjust
to operating on less energy.
T his is fam iliar to dieters who
find their weight-loss slows drama
tically o r even stops after a few
weeks on a low-calorie diet.
T he m ore severe the calorie
restriction, the m ore dram atic
the adjustm ent.
A n extremely low-calorie diet
can decrease the basal m eta
bolic rate by 45 percent. Since
th is ty p e o f d ie t c a n ’t an d
shouldn’t be maintained for very
long, weight is soon regained.
But som e researchers suggest
th a t as weight is regained m ore
o f it is stored as fat. D ieters m ay
end up with more fat than before,
even a t their original weight.

A keen eye,careful hands are
required to harvest home grown
corn at its best.
Sweet corn passes through its
prime m aturity quickly. The har
vest o f a single planting will last
only about seven days.
If harvest is delayed, the ker
nels become tough, starchy and
lose their sweet flavor.
Sweet corn should be harv
ested when the kernels are in the
milk stage. A t this stage the
silks are brow n and dry beyond
the end o f the husks ând thé ear
has enlarged enough to fill the
husks tightly to the tip.
A t this point, the kernels are
ab o u t as large as they will be
come, but they are still soft,
tender and well-filled.
The dry silks are a good sig
nal fo r determ ining the prim e
harvest time. You can also deter
mine corn m aturity by picking

husk; The kernels should look

less. W hen you do buy, be sure

you d o n ’t already have some
thing else which will do.
Som e persons are “crimpul-L

who can’t resist buying things.
