Roadrunners second
at Nationals
The Northwest Roadrunners
of Simnasho, Oregon, were the
runner-up at the first annual 40
year old and over national
basketball tournam ent held
over the weekend of April 4-6,
1984 in Ft. Hall, Idaho.
The roster consisted of Louie
Belgard, Mike Wertin, Jerom e
Main, Uren Leonard, Ricky
M inthorn, Jim Macy, and
m an ag er F ra n k lin “ C h in ”
Suppah.
The long trip had its effects
on the team as it showed in the
first game as the lead changed
several times. It was not until
the final quarter when the guys
got their act together to hold
off A rizona’s rally and post a
77-70 win. M inthorn led all
scorers with 25 points, others
contributing to the scoring
were Jim Macy 19, Wertin 16,
Belgard 10, Leonard 4, Main 2.
It was Lugo and Sugar who led
the Arizona attack each scoring
21 points apiece, Megerett 13,
Biakeddy 11, White 2, and
Track 2.
T he second gam e was
perhaps tougher than the first
game with Nez Perce-Umatilla
of Pendleton, because of
previous meetings with this
team. It was an all around
i
performance from the whole
team of solid ball playing,
sportsmanship and a good
bench that made the difference
to give them a 78-66 win to put
them in for the championship
game. Leading scorer for
Simnasho was W ertin with 36,
Macy 21, M inthron 8, Belgard
6, Main 5, Chin 2. For
Pendleton, Webb scored 29,
S e th 2 6 , C o w a p o o 6,
McCormack 4, Tias 1.
In the championship game
with Ft. Hall, the Roadrunners
were out manned in height as
well as depth on the bench but
with good team effort they
made a good game out of it
going down in defeat by the
score 74-53. The game was a lot
closer than the final score
indicated. The whole team
made a good showing for this
being the first tournam ent for
the older group.
Making the all star list from
the Simnasho Roadrunners
were Jim Macy and Mike
Wertin. The final standings of
the tourney was: 1st Ft. Hall,
I d a h o ; 2 n d . S im n a s h o
R o a d r u n n e r s ; 3 r d . F t.
W ash akie, W yom ing; 4th
Pendleton-Nez Perce.
