Nestled in a valley located on
the south end of the reservation
is the Nick Kalama ranch. Nick
is the Chief of the Paiute tribe
on th e W a rm S p rin g s
reservation. Many of his people
live on the south end of the
reservation.
For many years the Paiutes
have sought to obtain their own
longhouse, which they wanted
located in their area. Their
Chief has finally given them
that longhouse. In recent years
Nick decided he Would rebuild
a longhouse on his land. Nearly
50 years ago there was a
longhouse located, on Nick’s
present ranch. It was built on
his father’s land.
So, in March a memorial
dinner was held at the newly
finished longhouse Nick had
been working on the building,
putting it together whenever he
had money to buy material for
the building. A dinner was held
to dedicate the longhouse on a
cold and w indy M arch
Saturday.

Felix Walllulatum said he
remembered dancing in the old
Longhouse nearly 50 years ago.
The ^onghouse has dirt
floors and many people
remember when all of the
longhouses had such floors and
how nice it was to dance on the
earthen floors. Cooking is done
in Nick and Viola’s home which

could remember when the first
rodeos were held at his father’s
ranch, there were chutes but no
arena and thè bronc riders rode
their rides in the open field.
There are still chute posts
standing at the site. He recalled
a lady from Montana that was
a saddle bronc rider who would
go out to ride at the rodeos; she
also worked in the boarding
school as a matron in the girls
building.
