Cross country JVs improving
“We have a very fine team
this year. A lot of kids are out
and everyone is improving.”
Madras High cross-country
coach Dave Randall continues,
“We’ve won every meet except
the Madras Invitational.”
Coach Randall sees the
cross-country team as being
s tr o n g in c o m p e titio n .
Although winning keeps spirits
high his main objective, he
explains, is keeping the team
healthy.
Illness is taking its toll on the
team. Chip Calica was injured
this week, he says. Paul
Henderson has returned to the
cross-country track after
suffering a broken fémur.
Other teams members are
fighting off illness.
Warm Springs has its share
of runners, all on the JV team.
With work and experience they
may be seen in the future
running with the varsity. What
is necessary, says Randall, is
keeping them on the team and
keeping them in shape.
Members of the JV cross
country boys team from Warm
Springs include Raym ond
“Chip” Calica, Paul Hender-
son, Mark Stacona, Loren
Suppah, Sheldon Sutterleeand
Ken Sahme.

Long night for the Buffs

Buffaloes on the night of
September 30, 1983, as St.
Mary’s of Medford, Oregon,
came to town and just about
had their own way scoring in
every quarter they went home
with a lopsided victory of 31 -6.
The St- Mary’s Crusaders,
the top rated A class school in
the state, played the role of the
giant killer as they capped their
second win over a AA school
opponent in as many weeks.
The Crusaders capitalized on
the Buffs mis-cues and crucial
fumbles and turning them into
touchdowns gave them the
victory. The Crusaders held a
16-0 half-time lead.
What started out to be an
interesting second half saw the
B uffs sc o re th e ir o nly
touchdown midway through
the third quarter from a fumble
recovery on the 16-yard-line.
From that point, Scott Wiliams
connected with a pass to Spud
Smith for the touchdown, a try
for two points failed. The
Crusaders kicked another field
goal and added two more
touchdowns wrapping up the
«victory for them.
The Buffs start league play
by first traveling to Vale for
their first conference game on
October 7. The remaining
home games for the Buffs are
with Mac Hi on October 21 and
Nyssa on November 4.
