Sherars Bridge has come to
life with many scars to show it’s
existence. I have personally
witnessed many changes over
the years. Sherars Bridge has
taught me the meaning o f love.
The peace and enjoyment I get
there, has always been special.
As a small by, I still remember
the place as it was. The people
have all passed on who taught
me the importance of fishing.
There are only a few people left
who truly have any knowledge
about the place.
Many years ago, the people
used to all gather at Celilo to
fish and trade. My -people
stayed at Sherars Bridge to fish.
As a matter of fact, my father.
(Thomas David) located a
number of fishing sites. Also,
Grandpa (Fred Sumpter) took
me from the falls all the way
down to Buck Hollow. He told
me about all the fishing sites,
when to fish them, what size net
to use. He pointed out these
fishing Sites to me and told me
who used them. Most of the
fishermen today don’t know
the history of Sherars Bridge. I
was taught the respect Sherars
Bridge and everything that goes
along with the place, especially
the laws that govern the place,
not whiteman’s laws either. I
would like you to keep in mind
. the difference between the two
laws.
Our Chief was called upon
to settle disputes, misunder-
s t a n d in g s an d w r o n g s
committed by our people, or
else he appointed a person to
do so. But, today we don’t
practice this any more. Our
Tribal Council has put us all in
a very unreal predicament. One
of our most sacred resources
has been blemished. The Great
Spirit, who provided us with
this wonderful resource, may
someday abolish or curtail all
of our resources. The fish, wild
game and roots may disappear.
We will all have to pay for a few
people’s wrong doing.
The Chief is our leader, but
we don’t have a leader today. I
realize that the Simtustus
family is still in mourning but
we still must have a leader.
With respect to the Simtustus
and H eath fam ilies, the
chieftainship has to be filled.
The past three chiefs, as I
remember them, had set the
highest possible standards for
anyone to follow. I wouldn’t
want it to be any other way.
Our Warm Springs Chief is
looked up to by many, many
people all over the country, as
well as in Warm Springs.
We, the people, have to
revert back to our old laws if we
want to be traditional. We
d o n ’t h a v e a n y o t h e r
a lte r n a tiv e s. Our T rib al
Council has good intentions
but they don’t have the right to
decide a b o u t our Indian
traditional ways. By forming
the task force of individuals
who have very little knowledge
about the unwritten laws, it’s
frightening. The Superinten
dent, Chief-of-Police and tribal
m anagers d o n ’t have the
knowledge of our written laws
that govern Sherars Bridge.
They need to be educated
to understand our unwritten
laws. D on’t accept anything
less than the truth for our
sacred resources. Haying to
accept a few people’s opinion
just isn’t sufficient of adequate.
There are still some o f us old
timber left to provide the truth
about Sherars Bridge.

4-H Indian Heritage Club
attends State Fair
The Warm Springs 4-H
Indian Heritage Club will
participate in State Fair
activities in Salem, August 27
and 28,
Starting at 10 a.m on
Saturda, the club will present
an Indian dancing exhibition
and from 11 a.m to 4 p.m, they
will have their action booth
display where all 4-H leaders
will rotate time spent in the
booth.
On Sunday, beginning at 9
a.m is the fashion review
rehearsal from all interested
participants with the fashion
review beginning at 11 a.m. At
11:30, the club will present
