Butts fifth at state
When all the “Cheers, Rah-
Rah’s and Yeah team’s!” ended
and all statistics tallied, Roman
S u p p a h the W hite Buff
standout, was the first pick for
the all-tournament team for his
excellence and consistency in
scoring, rebounding and all-
around ability in each game.
Suppah scored a total of 100
points in four games giving him
a 25.0 point game average.
Suppah, made 38 of 82 field
goals and he was 24 of 35 at the
free throw line.
Jerome Davis, the other
M a d ra s W hite B uffaloes
standout, set an individual
scoring record for one game
when he scored 43 points in
their second game. This mark
surpasses the record set in 1981
by Henley’s Dean Andretta
who scored 41 points in a single
game.
Davis was also selected to the
second five of the all-tourney
team. He scored a total of 90
points, making 37 of 39 field
goal attempts and he was 16 of
24 at the free throw line.
Both Suppah and Davis
performed well but a heart,
breaker loss in their first game
prevented them from going a
lot further at State.

senior of the Madras White
Buffaloes were selected to the
class AA All-State Basketball
team. This is something rarely
seen of two players on the All-
State first team and both from
the same school. Things like
th is h a p p e n s a t sta te ;
tournaments or during all
conference selection, but for
All-State is something else.
Rounding out the first five
are David Thompson, LaSalle,
6'9" senior; Steve Vanek, St.
Helens, 6'9" senior; and Jason
Clark, Central, 6'4" senior.
Davis and Suppah were the
only two from Eastern Oregon
to make either the first or
second team which was quite
an accomplishment for the two

to Wapato, Washington to
participate in a boxing meet
held in . the Wapato Junior
High, March 5, starting at 7
p.m.

There were nine boys from
the WSBC who made the trip
but only four received bouts
because of the large turn out of
boxers during the card. There
were teams from the Columbia
R iver, W a p ato , N aches,
Yakima and the Golden Eagle
boxing dubs there.
In one of the highlight
matches for the night Tonv
Fuentes, 8-year-old 65 pound
class of the WSBC, battled
Jude Ortiz of Wapato in a
crowd pleaser where Tony
came out a big winner for the
local team. According to coach
Gerald Smith, Ortiz was very
aggressive at the beginning of
the bout but Tony used his
good left jab to turn the tables
and with determination, Tony
outclassed Ortiz for the win.
In another 8-year-old 65
pounder, Z-man Smith of the
WSBC had his hands full in a
bout with Miguel Oseguera
also of the Wapato boxing
club. Z-man managed to
outpoint his opponent for the
win, it was a close match all the
way.
Delbert Lawson in the 12-13
years old 90 pounds of WSBC
won the match with William
Clement of the Golden Eagle
Boxing Club. This team was
formerly the Warm Springs
Police Department club. They
also participated in the meet.

pounds won by a decision over

Jose Mendez of the Columbia
River Boxing Club to give the
WSBC a team entry sweep and
each boxer brought home a
trophy for their win. This was
the first boxing card held in
Wapato and the fans turned
out in full force and were very
supportive for each bout.
In other action, WSBC
participated in the Oregon
J u n i o r G o ld e n G lo v e s
tournament held on February
26, in Beaverton, Oregon.
In quarter final action,
Reynolds Allen 12-13 year old
85 pound defeated Sean Kirk of
West Eugene, but in the semi
finals Allen lost a questionable
decision to Dennis Henshaw of
Everett, Washington. Henshaw
went on to win that division
championship.
Tony Volde 10-11 year old 90
ounds lost a close bout to
ichard Smithson who is
boxing out of the Snohomish

on to win the championship of
this class.
Delbert Lawson 12-13 year
old 90 pounder was defeated by
Emmet Linton from Tacoma,
Washington. Linton was voted
the outstanding boxer of the
tournament and the champion
of that division.
David Lucei 14-15 year old
at 119 lost a close decision to
Richard Gonzalas of West
Eugene. Lucei tagged Gonzalas
with a straight right in the first
round to send him to the
canvas. In the second round
Lucei was caught with a left
hook and also being partially
off balance, hit the deck also
but was not hurt. The bout was
a good even match, however
Lucei came out on the short
end.

the Class AA State Basketball
tournament at Eugene.
Suppah was selected to the
second All-Tournament team
last year and is making his
appearance again this year.
This will be the first appearance
for Davis.

The next outing for the
WSBC is on March 19, in
Seattle, Washington, at the All-
Indian boxing tournam ent.
Smith said he will be taking
nine boys to that meet. Other
coming events will be on April
9-10, the Northwest meet of
champions which will be held
in Albany; the Diamond Belt
championship meet in Hood
River April 16-17 and April 23-
24; the Evergreen Champion
ship in Kelso, Washington.
