this, the Agency District has
instituted a new rule. If a
person is nom inated, that
person must be present to
accept or decline—or if that
person cannot attend the
m e e tin g , th e n w ritte n
c o n f i r m a t i o n m u s t be
presented a t time of the
nomination. If this is not done,
that nomination will not be
recognized.
F o r y o u r in fo rm a tio n ,
qualifications for office as
stated in the Constitution and
By-Laws are: No person shall
r e p r e s e n t th e C o n f e d
erated Tribes on the Council
unless he is a duly enrolled
member of the community who
has attained the age of 21 years,
and who has never been
convicted of a major crime.
The apportionm ent, also
from the C onstitution, is:

Yes, folks, it’s that time of
year again! The Personnel
Department is sponsoring the
annual St. Valentine’s Day
contest. Rules are as follows:
There are three categories in
this year’s contest.
1. Prizes will be awarded for
the best overall handmade
Valentine Card with the most
original greeting. All greetings
must begin with: “ Love i s ... ”

Letter to the Editor,
I would like to make a
comment in reference to the
remarks made by James Watt,
Secretary of the Interior. First 1
would like to say I feel Indians
are always being put down by
someone, like Mr. Watt. His
comment about socialism on
reservations being the cause ol
a high drug abuse rate, social
disease and alcohol abuse
aren’t as bad as he made it
sound. It is true we have our
share of problems but cities
outside of Indian Country have
much more then we do. In the
cities 1 have seen trash,
hookers, and winos in the
streets. In most large cities a
person can drive through the
streets and see people laying in
the streets, drugs being sold.
These are not Indians.
A person can read in the
n e w sp a p e rs an d see on
television stories about crime,
rape and kidnappings.
I ask the people who think
they must make statements
about Indians to stop and think
just where these large cities and
their slums came from. The
A m erican N ativ es d id n 't
welcome the settlers of this
c o u n try with slum s and
ghettos. They are a product of
the people who came to this
country after the Indian. Our
waters were not polluted before
the coming of the non-Indian.
In d ia n s a re living on
reservations and on these
reservations you won’t see
trash in the streets, hard drugs
being pushed, bums, hookers
and pimps. On reservations
you won’t find people being
mugged or snipers killing
people.
Before these non-Indians,
look at Indians and condemn
life on reservations they should
clean up their cities. We have
problems but in comparison to
the rest of the nation our
problems could be labeled as
minor.
America hasn’t solved the
problems of the many refugees
brought in but still they seek
e n tr a n c e in to A m e ric a .
America should take care of the
problems of the people who
have been here for years like the
Blacks, the bum laying on the
street, the junkie looking for
hard drugs to shoot into his
body, the pimps and hookers
on America’s streets.
There are good Indians.
There are good non-Indians.
Each has good and bad. All
have problems, instead of of
pointing fingers, let’s get
together and try to solve the
problems. We all live in this
land together so let’s be friends.
If there are people out there
who can’t learn to live without
bugging Indians, then perhaps
they need to go back to their
old country. We are willing to
leave them alone and they need
to leave us alone. We can solve
our problems.
I feel we as Indians, are able
to return to the old ways and
still survive. But this is now
how the world is presently set
up. Those people who criticize
us, like this country as much as
we do. So it isn’t likely that
people will leave this country to
go back to the land of their
forefathers. So lets learn to be
friends and stop putting each
other down.
