Woodstove safety
This is a safety reminder for
those who heat their homes
with wood stoves.
You are urged to clean the
stove stack regularity of
creosote. Creosote, if allowed
to accumulate, can ignite a fire
in the attic of your home and
could cause property loss and
serious burns.
In just the last year there
were stack fires in Warm
Springs—they could have been
prevented by simple creosote
removal. By cleaning the stack
once each year, you can greatly
reduce risk in your home. If
high-pitch wood, such as pine,
is burned often it is a good idea
to clean the stack twice each
year. Cleaning equipm ent
specially made for wood stoves
is readily available in hardware
stores.
Children should not be
allowed to play near stoves, but
in case a child should fall
against a hot stove, the child
should be pulled away from the
stove immediately and the
burned area should be placed in
cold water as soon as possible
to prevent further skin damage.
For serious burns, keep the
skin in cold water while
traveling to the clinic.
Wood stoves are good
energy-savers, but keep in mind
th a t safety m easures are
necessary when they are used.

Tax book published
Ä '
The USDA Forest Service
has issued a new handbook on
“The Timber Owner and His
Federal Income Tax” that
incorporates recent changes in
income tax laws related to
forest land.
Designed as a guide for the
small or large timberland
owner, the 75-page booklet will
be of help also to consulting
foresters, extension and State
service foresters, bankers,
accountants, attorneys, and
others involved in income tax
matters.
A clearer understanding of
income tax proecedures may be
financially beneficial and
e n c o u ra g e b e tte r fo re s t
management. “It is hoped that
savings from correct reporting
of timberland receipts and
expenditures will act as an
incentive for people to grow
more timber, to protect it, and
to use it wisely,” said Jeff M.
Sirmon, Regional Forester.
How should you report
tim ber sale receipts and
expenditures? Can you claim a
deduction when your timber is
damaged or destroyed by fire
or windstorm? These and other
questions are answered in the
handbook.

Oregon Community College
Directors unanimously agreed
to hold the line on 1983-84
tuition for In-District students,
while increasing tuition for
Out-of-district and Out-of-
State students by 9%.
College P resident Fred
Boyle noted that “The college’s
first priority is to In-District
students. In view of the current
econom ic situation facing
Central Oregonians, a raise of
tuition would cause severe
hardship.”
In other business, the Board
