Investigation uncovers
illegal fishing scam

The investigation, according
to a special agent in charge of
the National Fisheries Service
N o r th w e s t e n f o r c e m e n t
branch, verified officials’ belief
that illegal fishing has been a
major factor in the loss o f adult
salmon from the Columbia
River between Bonneville and
McNary dams. It was reported
that in 1981, 40,000 adult fall
c h i n o o k s a lm o n w e re
unaccounted for.
The investigation began in
April 1981 at the request of
state Department of Fisheries
to document the number of
salmon taken illegally and to
identify illegal commercial
markets for fish.

residence of David Sohappy
Sr. and a nearby mobile home
in Cook’s Landing, Washing
ton. Warrants were used to also
search seven vehicles. An
affidavit filed in federal court
said the trucks were suspected
of having been used to
transport the illegally caught
fish. A search warrant was also
served on the Season Fish
Company in Kelso, Washing
ton.

Ivan Scott, 23, died on June
13 at his residence in West
H ills. He was b o rn in
Redmond, Oregon on August
22, 1958 to Ray and Adonis
Scott. He was an enrolled
member of the Warm Springs
Confederated Tribes. He had
lived in Warm Springs all his
life.
On December, 1981 he
married Annette Arthur. He
attended schools in Warm
Springs and Madras.
He is survived by his wife
Annette, his father Ray Scott
and a brother Jimmy Scott all
of Warm Springs.
Dressing services were held
at the M adras Evergreen
Chapel ;on June 16 at 3:00 p.m.
