Zig Zag accident kills
one, injures two others

A two-car accident near Zig
Zag claimed the life of a tribal
member, injured one other
tribal member and a man from
Portland.

investigation.
Larry Miller, 27, of Warm
Springs was dead on arrival at
Gresham General Hospital
following the early morning
accident A pril 10. Isaac
M itchell, a passenger in
Miller’s 1980 Citation, suffered
a broken neck'and facial cuts.
David Fisher, driver of the
other vehicle, suffered a broken
leg. Both were listed in stable
condition.
Mitchell was hospitalized
at Gresham General Accord
ing to his wife Julie, Mitchell’s
doctors said he was “born
again,” since people with
similar injuries are usually
paralized from the neck down.
Mitchell is not paralized, but
doctors are keeping a close eye
on the one shattered vetabra
and two broken vetabrae in his
neck. If the vertabrae move,
surgery will be necessary.
According to Oregon State
Police reports, the accident
occurred near the Barlow Trail
Restaurant. Fisher apparently
pulled out of the Barlow Trail
Mitchell was asleep at the
time of the accident and did not
know what happened or where
th e a c c id e n t o c c u r r e d ,
according to Mitchell’s Wife.

ground search for, a man
missing on the Deschutes
River.

A pickup, which had been
parked at the Trout Creek
campground for some time,
was reported to Jefferson
County police by the BLM.
The pickup is registered to
David Winniford of Parkdale,
O regon. Police contacted
Winniford’s family and were
told he was not home, but
f lo a tin g th e D e sc h u te s.
Winniford was last seen April
1.6 by campers at Trout Creek.
Wininiford put his kayak in at
the bridge at Warm Springs on
April 16.
A k a y a k , a p p a r e n tly
belonging to Winniford, was
spotted April 28 near Trout
Creek. Acting Warm Springs
Chief of Poice Ray Calica said
the canvas bottom of the kayak
was ripped open “pretty good.”
Details of the accident are
sketchy at this time and the
search is continuing.

A single car accident claimed
the lives of two Warm Springs
residents April 25 at Lake
Simtustus on the Pelton Dam
Road. Dead are Waylon L.
Suppah, age 2 and Christop
herson Matilton, age 31.
The car left the road and
w ent dow n a 100 fo o t
embankment and plunged into
the lake. M a tilto n was
apparently the driver of the car
according to a Jefferson
County Sheriffs department
spokes person.
Matilton was thrown from
the car. His body was recovered
by Jefferson County Search
and Rescue workers a short
distance from the car. He was
pronounced dead at the scene.

recovered from the car by a

Protection diver.
A third person, identified as
Billy Ponder, escaped from the
car after it entered the lake. He
made his way to shore, climed
the embankment and walked
three miles to the Pelton Dam
Store where he called the
Jefferson County Sheriff’s
department of the accident at
11:30 p.m.
The accident is believed to
have occurred between 9:30
and 10 p.m., according to a
spokesperson for the Sheriffs
department. The location of
the accident was 13 miles
northwest of Madras on the
Pelton Dam road, just south of
the Willow Creek bridge.
Three injured in single-car accident
Three people were trans
ported to Mountain View
H o s p ita l w ith in ju r ie s
following an auto accident
April 21 at the intersection of
highway 3 and E 141 access
road, near the Harold Culpus
residence, according to Warm
Springs police departm ent
sergeant Rick Souers.
The accident occurred at
6:46 p.m. There were five
occupants in the car at the time
of the accident. Excessive speed
was listed as the primary cause
of the accident. According to
police, the car was traveling at a
high rate of speed when it hit
the shoulder, went back on the
pavement, began swerving and
then left the road. The car
rolled 500 feet and landed on its
top in the ditch where it came to
rest. The five occupants were
throw n out of the car,
according to police. All
escaped serious injury.
Identified as driver of the car
was Ramona Knight. The
o c c u p a n ts w ere M a risa
Cooper, Kendall Arthur, Etta
Goodenow and Debbie Brown,
all of Warm Springs. Knight,
Goodenow and Brown were
transported to the hospital by
the Warm Springs' Fire and
Safety Department.
