Seven runners competing in
the Pi-Ume-Sha day 8.2 mile
run returned to the starting
point before they had
completed the course.
Escorted by members of the
Warm Springs police
department, the runners who
were unfamiliar with the area
followed the official vehical
back to the Community Center
instead of going on the
Deschutes Crossing where the
course then turned back.
The police escort had been
given an inaccurate map of the
course and went by it taking
the runners back before the run
was complete. Jerry Sampson,
who knew the correct course,
led those who were behind him
in the right direction.
The first seven runners
crossing the finish line
expressed disappointment
when they found that they had
not completed the run.
