1976—Spilyay’s first year on the job
1976 was a year of firsts for Warm Springs. Spilyay
Tymoo was, and still is, the tribe’s first newspaper. Many
things happened to supply adequate news for coverage.
Basketball star Bill Walton began his annual visits to
Warm Springs in 1976 and National Geographic
photographer David Boyer began to work on his article
about the reservation.
A trade fair held at Kah-Nee-Ta brought many people
from far away to trade their goods. The fair was held on
Labor Day weekend. Also happening at Kah-Nee-Ta in
mid-October was the signing of the fisheries pact between
BPA and four major Northwest Indian tribes. The pact
was designed to restore the Columbia River anadromous
fishery.
Not all was peaches and cream in Warm Springs
during the year. In August, we were without water for
nearly two days due to a break in the main water line near
the Shaker Church. A petition to cancel the contract of
the tribal law firm was circulated. The tribal council
voted eight to one to reject the petition.
Frontier Burns — The fire which destroyed the Frontier Tavern and Rainbow Market on April 21,
1976 was one of the first major events covered by Spilyay. Editor Sid Miller was on the scene to take
an entire sequence of the fire from the first signs of smoke to the investigation by the state arson
squad.
Lions Roared—32 charter members were initiated into the Warm
Springs chapter of the Lions December 11,1976. Richard Macy,
shown here, was the Warm Springs club's first president.
Lodge Addition Dedication — Dignitaries, tribal members and many others attended the dedication
in June 1976 of the new 55-room wing at Kah-Nee-Ta lodge. The dedication came on the 12th
anniversary of the resort which opened with the village in 1964.

Stuffed Steno Pool— The steno pool office was a typical example of the overcrowded conditions in
the Administration Building in 1976. Just such cramped quarters prompted the construction of the Miss Warm Springs 1976—Sarah Greene
new 26,000 square foot administration building located below West Hitts.
