Buffs lose out at state
All-conference feam selected
Among those selected for
this year’s All Conference
basketball team, Eriç Mitchell,
a local boy, received honorable
mention. Ron Wilson of the
Buffaloes and team captain
along with Tim Witbrock of
Burns were both unanimous
picks. Tracy Runge, also of
Madras and Mark Hammond,
Burns; Paul Unger, Vale; Larry
Parker, Mac Hi, rounded out
the first five.

All four of the Madras boys
are one of the reasons why the
Madras White Buffaloes made
it to the State Basketball
Tournament at Eugene in
M cA rth u r C o u rt at the
University of Oregon for the
third consecutive year.
Eric Mitchell showed why he
received honorable mention for
the conference All-Star team
with his good defensive play,
fin e s h o o tin g a n d his
outstanding rebounding. He
picked off nine rebounds in the
opening game against Henley
despite a height disadvantage
to the taller opponents which
makes the Warm Springs
people proud of him.
Boxers win five
The Warm Springs Boxing
team competed in their first all-
Indian boxing tournam ent
March 8 at Lummi, Washing­
ton, and out of seven boxers
competing, five brought home
championship jackets. The
other two were given runners-
up medals.
Reynolds Allen, 60 lbs.,
Tony Stacona, 80 lbs., Sterling
Holiday, 90 lbs., Mervin
Govenor, 95 lbs., and Mike
Berry, 147 lbs., were given
cham pionship jackets foi
winning all their matches.
Sheldon Sutterlee and Alvis
Smith III were runners-up and
each received a medal. Demc
Tewee and Cecil Govenor alsc
made the trip but had nt
opponents to box.
Mervin Govenor was given t
trophy for “Best Bout—Jr
Division” and Mike Berry
stopped his opponent in the
second round.
“All these bys knoRv what to
go after, they know what to
do,” said coach Ron Govenor.
“They really put out.”
“These boys don’t miss any
practice and that’s what I like
abut the boys.”
Those teams making the AH-
Indian tourney were Chilli­
wack, B.C.; Yakima Nation;
Granger, Washington, Gensaw
Boxing Club of Klamath,
California; W arm Springs
California; Warm Springs; and
Lumi (host team).
Govenor hopes to take his
team to Chilliwack, B.C for
thier boxing tournament April
18-19.
He also hopes to take four
senior boys to the Indian
N ationals to be held in
Carnegie, Oklahoma, April
26,27.
The Madras White Buffa­
loes, traveling to Eugene for
their third state AA basketball
tournament in as many years,
.lost their first game to Henley,

Philomath. Today they meet
two-time defending champion
and number 1 ranked Marist.
Henley took advantage of
the Buffs cold shooting in the
first and third quarters.
Madras’ field goal percentage
for the game was 30.4%
compared to Henley’s 47.8%.
But for the first half, Madras
could only make 7 out of 29
field goals attempted to shoot
24%.
Earlier in the season, Madras
beat Henley in overtime 64-61,
and they also lost once to them,
80-60.
Scott Vanderhoff led the way
for the Hornets with 19 points.
Wes Miller had 13 and Norm
Barney had 12 points, 8 of
those were scored in the last
quarter.
Ron Wilson was high scorer
for the Buffs with 14 points.
Carl Daniels and Eric Mitchell
both had 12 with Mitchell
bringing down nine rebounds
and making six out of seven
free throws.
W ith s e v e n s e c o n d s
remaining on the clock against
Philomath, Ron Wilson made
a 15 foot jumper to clinch the
game 60-58. But it took a 14
point rally in the third quarter
to keep the Buffs in the game.
Tracy Runge and Ron Wilson
both had 26 points for the game
to lead all scorers.
The consolation round
played Friday morning ended
with a Marist victory over
Madras 61-54. Carl Daniels
and Ron Wilson were the high
scorers each making 13 points
