Local cowboys
hang in there
With the rodeo season
approaching midpoint, local
cowboys and cowgirls are
finding the competition to be
stiff and plentiful.
Coming out of the White
Swan Treaty Days Rodeo held
June 8-10, Leland Tom split
third and fourth with Vince
Garcia in the saddle bronc
riding in the first go-round and
got bucked off his second
horse. In the calf roping Tom
Begay had a time of 20.18 in the
first go-round and placed sixth,
while Marita Johnson place

barrel racing. In the junior
barrel racing Shana Johnson
won the first go, then place
second in the second go and
won second in the average
Sammy Allen won third in the
second go of the junior barrels
Dave Best, Omak, Washing
ton, won the all-around

Western States sanctioned rodeo
Hot weather, tough stock
The heat along with the
rough stock gave cowboys
a week-end to remember at the
rodeo held here June 23-24.
Despite the hot weather the
rodeo drew a record number of
entries which totaled up as high,
as 286 who came from all
points in the western states
which included Washington,
M ontana, Idaho, N evada,
C a lif o r n ia , C a n a d a an d
Oregon.
Stock providing all the
action came from the 10-Bar
ranch a local stock contractor,
the Sombrero stock contractor
from Sisters, Oregon provided
the tough bulls, and the wild
and woolly horses cam» fresh,
off the range from here on the
reservation.
A rather slim crowd braved
the heat and cheeked their
favorites as they performed
their special events. The bulls
were something else as they out
scored the cowboys 23-4. Even
though there was not a cloud in
the sky it rained a lot of
cowboys in the bull riding
event.
•Vince Garcia took top
honors in the bareback event
winning with a score of 69.
Oliver Louis of Vernon, British
Columbia won the saddle
bronc event with a 74 scoring.
Dave Best, one of the very few
who stayed aboard one of the
rank bulls, won that event
scoring a good 77 points. Dave
Best comes from Om ak,
W ashington. Les Reynolds
topped all calf ropers with the
time of 10.31 seconds. Wes
Williams won the cow milking,
his time 22.29 seconds. Roger
Williams and Mel Sampson
won the team roping. Betty
Sampson rounded the barrels
w ith th e tim e of 18.58
seconds to win that event.
Bronson team won the wild
horse race.
The Jr. Barrels was won by
Sammy Allen a local girl with
the time of 19.84 seconds. Also
placing 3rd in the Jr. barrels
was Shanna Johnson with a
time of 20.02. In the Novice
Cow riding Mark Valdez won
that event. Carla Bagley came
in 2nd with a 64, Larry Scott
was 3rd with 60 and Ron
Clements 4th with 51.
There were a total of nine
locals that managed to place in
the rodeo however there were
no winners in the senior
division. The only local to get a
first place was Sammy Allen in
the Jr. Barrels. Among others
who placed were; in the saddle
bronc Lee Tom and Terry
Squiemphen split 5th and 6th
as each scored 62 points. Dan
Scott placed 5th in the oow
milking; Gordon Scott and
Herman Anderson placed 5th
in the team roping; Cathy
Heath placed 6th in the barrel
race with the time of 19.06
seconds.!
The program went right on
schedule without any delay
between events. The next

be held here in Warm Springs

12, and will be staged in the He
He Mill rodeo arena which is
