Rolls a 300
D ick Souers D oes It
Looks like Dick Souers got
his Thanksgiving
“turkeys”
early this year.
On the night of September 27,
Dick Souers put it all together
and just rolled a perfect 300
game at the Pelton Lanes bowl
ing alley, something seldom seen
in this part of the country.
When Souers was asked how
he felt about the game, he
jokingly said, “Did you see me
on my knees all the way through
the gam e?” Later, he said that
he thought it would never happen
and did not give it much thought.
He just sat at the score table

can’t get it together in bowling to
get a 300 game.
The first 300 game was done
by Vernon Tanewasha during the
Erv Allen memorial bowling
tournament earlier this year.
This was the first sanctioned 300
game in the Pelton Lanes which
earned Vernon a nice sapphire
ring and other prizes. Vernon
said, “I really tried for my 300
gam e.” He said he chopped the
one pin into the tenth but some
how all the pins fell. “In the
eleventh frame I hit the pins
square in the middle expecting a
split,” he said, “but some pin

Utile Guys Football
When the call was made this
year for football players by
coach Harold “Campy” Smith,
about 30 to 35 ambitious gridsters
reported on the grid-iron just
behind the Community Center
about a week ago. Some of them
look like they might weigh 50
pounds soaking wet.
After a week’s work the boys
are starting to shape up a little
and are looking forward to their
first game which is tentatively
scheduled for Saturday, October
7 here at Warm Springs. The
local Gladiators will tangle with
a team from Lapwai, Idaho, and
the game is . scheduled to get
underway at 1 p.m., Smith said.
Campy is in the process of
scheduling games with Lummi,
Neah Bay and Yakima, all from
the state of Washington. It was
said that it is quite certain that
the boys will be traveling to Neah
Bay on October 22, for a return
game. Last year Neah Bay came
here to Warm Springs and pro
vided some tough competition
for the local gridders.
The little guys football is for
boys from the ages of 6 to 14
years old, however the 14 year
old boys must weight 130 pounds
or less. Lummi, Neah Bay,,
Yakima and Warm Springs will
follow the procedure as set down
by the coaches on the 130 pound
rule. With this rule it will pretty
well even out each team.
Lapwai, on the other hand, is
an independent and does not use
this rule as they are a strictly Jr.
high team. So with this we can
use all of our 14 year olds, Campy
said.
Sometimes with the weight
and age limits it’s very hard to
schedule games for the kids. It
was said that all positions are
still wide open so it will depend
on the boys who are devoted and
attend each practice session
without any horse-play.
“We, have several
good
potentials this year,” the coach
said. He added, “We do miss
some of the boys we lost from
last year’s squad who moved into
the Jr. high ranks over in
Madras. Most of them are start
ers because of this program.
Well, that’s what the program is
set up for and that’s to familiar
ize the boys with the game of
football,” Campy said.
Here the kids learn the
basics of blocking, tackling and
running with the ball. “Right
now we are working on double
teaming on offense,” the coach
said. At the beginning, the boys
on their first turn out really don’t
know much about the game, but
as time passes there is a great
deal of improvement in all the
kids. Determination and practice
is the key to learning the game.
The team is expecting at
least four games and hopefully
six this year. Campy, the head
coach, enjoys working with the
boys and assisting him this year

of, and th at’s right in the pocket.
With two more strikes to go, he
calmly steps up, measures his
stride, and with a graceful ap
proach he was on-target once
again.
When he made his final ap
proach there was
complete
silence in the entire bowling
alley. He picked up his ball, got
into position, made his approach,
and delivers. At that point every
one felt he had done one of the
impossibles in the bowling alley
— and that’s the 300 game. All
that could be heard was the
clattering of the pins and then
the roar from everyone who was
in the Pelton Lanes. It appeared
that the yells and applauds could
be heard as far away as the
mid-west.
It wasn’t until the seventh
frame that fans began to take
notice of the coolness Dick was
showing. From that point on, as
he stepped up all the bowlers
hesitated to watch what might be
in store. This could prove to be
one of the greatest nights for
Dick during his bowling career.
Souers said that if he thought
this was going to happen after
the seventh or eighth frame, and
if he had started concentrating,
he may have boo-boo-ed the
whole thing.
Souers finished the night
with a 665 series, picking up
games of 185 and 180 to round out
a successful evening. His pre
vious high game was a 279 and
his best series a 735.
When asked if he would like
to comment on what he just
accomplished, Souers, with pride
and a sparkle in his eyes, refused
to say anything.
Connie Allen, proprietor of
the Pelton Lanes commented
that there have been only three
sanctioned 300 games in Central
Oregon and all three happened at'
the Pelton Lanes, and also that
all three have been accomplish
ed by bowlers of Indian descent.
Muskopf said that he has
been bowling for some time now
and has never had a 300 game
yet. He said he came close a time
or two but never has done it. He
also said that he has played golf
for a short time and has had a
hole-in-one, but he said he just
that all the 300 games have come
in her establishment.
As of press time, here are the
results of the league: in first, so
far, is Madras Auto Supply sport
ing a 13-3 record. Next is Farm
Bureau and
Warm Springs
Athletic Association each having
a 10-6 record. Next comes Zane
Jackson Logging Co., Confeder
ated Tribes, Alfred Smith Jr.
Logging Co., and Alice’s Restau
rant all having a 9-7 record;
Macy’s and V.F.W. Post No. 4217
each have a 7-9 record. Kah-Nee-
ta and Porter House have a 6-10
record and Tony’s following the
pack with a 1-11 record.

In the high team game it was
Zane Jackson’s with 971, next
Madras Auto Supply with 960 and
third was Alfred Smith Logging
with 902. For the high individual
game went to Dick Souers with
his 300 game, next was John
Wright with a 253 and third was
Alfred Smith with a 233 game.

action done the job. During my
final approach I was a little off
target, but it seemed to carry
just enough to get the strike and
the 300 gam e,” he added.
John Wright got his 300 game
a little after Vernon did and this
was during the Wednesday night
mixed doubles. Wright who has
had an average of 180 to 199 all
season long got his act together
to gel his perfect game. At the
present time he is bowling for the
Zane Jackson Logging team dur
ing the Wednesday night Warm
Springs league.. On the same
night that Souers got his 300
game, Wright had what looked
like the second 300 game on the
same night. This went up until
the ninth frame when he missed.
While Wright was having a
string of strikes, Connie Allen
remarked, “Oh no! They can’t do
this to me two times in one
night.” She is proud of the fact
