— The Powwow in Pictures—
PRESIDE—Pi-Ume-Sha Queen
Colleen Seelatsee reigned over
the 1978 powwow with the sup­
port of her grandmother Ellen
Heath. Colleen was honored with
the beaded crown and a shawl
for selling the most raffle tick­
ets, over 900, for the Pi-Ume-Sha
Committee.
PRACTICE—While the drums
beat for the younger lad ies
round dance contest, a team of
women p racticed their steps
outside the arena. Marcia Soliz,
Helene W eeks and Mary Ann
Thomas later won the women’s
team round dance with their
well-synchronized,
graceful
m ovem ents. Mary Ann also
went on to win the ladies
individual graceful dance.
PRANCE-The em cee is the oil
that keeps a powwow running
smoothly. But Nathan “ Eight-
b all” Jim w as relieved of his
announcing long enough to be
thanked with an honor dance -
the “ Eightball Special.”
PLAY-Under the tarpaulin can­
opy, chanting voices and tapping
stick s rem inded nearby pow-
wowers that the stick gam e
tournament was alive and well.
Drums, sticks and bones passed
hands many times through the
weekend. The team led by Wil­
son Wewa, Jr. (above left) won
the double elimination tourney.
PRIZE—Champ Masami Danzu-
ka won the little girls war dance
contest Friday night and spent
the rest of the weekend practic­
ing for her next powwow.
