Don't You Think I've Had It
Marriagewise? Asks Lana
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD Ifl "Nofmc: no
tir. I'll never get married again."
These familiar words came
from an unfamiliar source Lana
Turner. Many a recently divorced
star utters the same sentiment.
But Lana! This is too much!
"Don't you think I've just about
had it?" she reasoned.
She had a point , there. She has
been married five times to four
men Artie Shaw, Steve Crane
(twice), Bob Topping and Lex
Barker, from whom she recently
separated.
1 reminded her that her pal
Clark Gable made a similar no
marriage edict and f '' "
Ja.er married for the fifth lime,
to Kay Spreckcls.
"That's right: he did," she re
flected, adding with a giggle,
"Well, you have to make conversation."
She said she hadn't started
dating a?ain. "I h"",'' --"
playmates," she pouted. No doubt

the situation will improve as soon
as Uus word gets around.
Perhaps as an antidote to un
happincss, Lana has plunged her
self into work. She is now mak
ing "The Lady Takes a Flyer"
with Jeff Chandler, her first film
in almost a year and a half.
During her lunch hours, she is
undergoing fittings for wardrobe
in "Peyton Place,'' which she
starts the day after she finishes
"Lady."
"I only wish I could have start
ed this grind with a little more
energy, she remarked. "1
haven't worked since a year ago
November, when 1 finished 'The
Rains of fianchipur.'
But just before I started this
picture everything happened.
There was the marriage breaking
up, the television show (with Bob
Hope), and the business with my
daughter.'
She referred lo Cheryl's refusal
In return to a private school,
choosing to adventure on skid
row. The girl is now In a public
school and happy,
After her long years under
straight salary at MGM, Lana is
going for the dough. Her deal for
the current picture at Universal
International gives her 50 per
cent of the profits.
Nilsen Urges
Tougher Labor
Camp Control
PORTLAND (UP)-State Labor
Commissioner Norman Nilsen t,o
day recommended a stiffening of
st a n da r d s for migrant labor
camps in Oregon.
The recommendations to Gov.
Robert Holmes followed an in
vestigation last week into a Clack
amas county situation after work
ers had been evicted and were
cared for by welfare authorities.
Nilsen suggested that closer
liasion should be maintained be
tween states "so that people will
not come to Oregon expecting to
be employed when jobs are non
existent, only to become wards of
the state of welfare agencies.
Ho also said he had talked with
growers and suggested establish
ment of a "code of ethics which
would include that all members
comply with the labor, health and
other laws pertaining, to their
operations."
