One who succeeded is Ilona
Marias, a hairdresser from Bud
apest. At 32 this pretty, slim wom
ari. Is turning grey. Sitting with
her ; arm around her 37-year-old
husband Lajns, Ilona shivers as
she tells her slory: '
I't first tried to get away In
January, but was slopped by the
Communist border guards and
sent, back to Budapest with a rub
ber "stamp in my identity card,
saying that I was a would-be es
capee. 1 knew that I would be
pitted up by the AVO (secret
police) sooner or later and with
tht mark In my identification pa
pers' 1 would be finished.

of'being arrested no longer. I dis
guised myself as an old peasant
woman and traveled by train to
a istation near the Austrian bor
der'.' Each time there were sccu
rity'checks. I went into the ladies'

!'A farmer helped me. At night
he put me on his cart and drove
me to a place about 10 miles from
the; Austrian border. He showed
me 'in which direction to go.
??When you see a neon glow
you are in Austria,' he said. I
walked on alone.
"I stumbled through the pitch
darkness. Sometimes I fell into
holes and ditches. Twice I had to
cross a river of icy water and
nearly drowned."
Mrs. Marias was found uncon
clous on a street of the Austrian
border village Deutschkrcuz. She
is now In a refugee camp await
ing ; emigration to any country
that will take her and her hus
band, a barber.
