Quartet Prepares for Contest Here

29-year-old Mary Francos Hagan

spying for Hie Syrians or for
anyone else."
In Paris, Miss Hagan told re
porters she had just had her first
bath in eight months. French po
lice kept her passport while the
plane was on the ground hero.

Miss Hagan, of Huntington, W.
Va., was released yesterday after
serving eight months of a one-year
sentence. She pleaded innocent at
her secret three-day trial in Jeru
salem last October. The court con
victed her of collecting secret in
formation in Israel and making
notes of it in violation of the
country's Official Secrets Act.
She asked to be flown to Cyprus
for a visit with Caleb Kayali, Syri
an Foreign Office official she
claimed was her husband, but Is
raeli officials made her release
conditional on her direct' flight
home.
Kayali' has denied they were
married. Miss Hagan refused to
answer questions of French re
porters about her marital status.
They noted she wore a wedding
ring.
Miss Hagan. a student of Mid
dle Eastern affairs and a former
employe of Syrian diplomatic del
egations in the United Nations
and Washington, said she went to

'The Israelis seemed to consid
er that these visas automatically

Mutilation Slayer Gives Up in

resident who was killed in a Fri
day night highway accident near
Harrisburg, will be at 2 p.
Tuesday at Sunset Chapel in
Portland Memorial Cemetery.
Arthur A. Selander, 72, the vic
tim's husband, was reported re
covering in Sacred Heart hospit
al at Eugene, from injuries suf
fered in the two-car-crash, inlan
der is a former Chief Appraisal
engineer for the State Tax Com
mission and well known artist.
None-serious injuries were also
sustained by three occupants of
the second car involved in the
crash. They were Floyd Pressler
and Henry Tucker, both of 1885
S. River Rd., Salem, and Sarah
Adair, Klamath Falls.
Mrs. Sclandcr was born Feb.
14, 1888, at Sumner, Ore. She
and her husband were married
Sept. 11, 1906 at Portland. She
was a resident of Salem for 20
years until moving to Oswego
about 1950. She formerly was a
member of the Amaranth Lodee
of Salem. .
Survivors in addition to the wi
dower include a son, Menalkas
Selander, Oswego; two daughters,
Mrs.-Phyllis Clark, Grants Pass,
and Mrs. Genevera Saucrbrv.
Elkadcr, Iowa: two sisters and 10
grandchildren.
Batis Service
Set Tuesday
Funeral services for William
T. Batis, 157 S. Winter St., who
died Saturday at his home, will
be at 1:30 p ,m. Tuesday in Howell-Edwards
chapel. Dr. Brooks
Moore will officiate and burial
will be' in Bclcrcst Memorial
Park.
. Balis was found dead in his
bathtub by his wife shortly after
returning from a fishing trip on
the Abiqua river. Cause of death
has not been determined. He had
been in apparently good health
since an emergency appendecto
my several months ago.
He was born Nov. 28, 1896 at
Crum. Tex. .and had lived in Al
bany for 27 years prior to mov
ing to Salem in 1939. He was a
salesman before becoming an
Oregon State hospital aide about
12 years ago. Batis was a mem
ber of the Fraternal Order of Ea
gles and tho First Baptist Church
in Albany.
Survivors include the widow.
Mrs. Anna Batis, and one step
son, Robert King, both of Salem;
and three sisters, Mrs. P. M.
Paul, Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs.

His body was found April 17 in

forwarded west, along with fin
gerprints. FBI agents were to
come, here from Seattle to take
charge .of the case.
Allison's statement, McCullough
said, related that on April 7 he
killed a man with, whom he had
been living in Mendham County,
N.J., in an argument over liquor.
He said he robbed his victim of
$500 and took his car.
Discovery of Vallacchi's aban
doned car led to an investigation
and the gruesome finding of his
body, New Jersey's Morris County
prosecutor Frank C. Sccrbo re
ported. Scerbo also said Allison
had traveled west by bus and had
been running away ever since.
He came here from Seattle Saturday.

Primrose Show Attracts

Paul Sliffe won senior sweepstakes
honors at the Garden clubs 10th
annual primrose show. Mrs.
Sliffe's honor was awarded for
having the greatest number of
prize winning exhibits In the show.
Mrs. Frank Pranger won a blue
ribbon for a deep brown bloom
with golden eye. Mary Palmer,
pupil in the 4th grade at St.
Mary's school won the junior
swepstakes.
Top honors in the garden club
division was won by Scotts Mills.
Mrs. Bruno Schmidt of Crooked
Finger prepared the exhibit.
Woodburn Garden club -was sec
ond prize winner, and Labish
Meadows took third honors.
One Candelabra primrose show
by Mrs. Harold French of Salem
was judged worth of a blue in the
opinion of the judges. Other single
entries placing were a single pur
