80 Persons Attend
Food Confab Here
Some 80 persons, employed in
itate institutional kitchens, are
attending the third annual Ore
tfjen Institutional Food Service
Conference here.
Tne two-day conference, being
held at Hillcrest School (or Girls,
opened at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and
mil conciuae Friday atternoon.
Speaking to the group at the open
ing session was Gov. Robert D.
Holmes.
On the program for the meeting
are talks with food specialists,
food films and panel discussions.
Mental Health
Body to Hear
Mel Murphy
Speaker at the spring luncheon
meeting of the Marion County
Mental Health Advisory Council at
the YWCA Monday noon will be
Wei Murphy, executive director of
the Oregon Mental Health Assn.
, His talk, which will be a feature
of Mental Health Week, will be on
"Mental Health in Oregon." Mrs.
Henry Meyer will be taking res
ervations for the luncheon until
Saturday.

ance Clinic. The officers are Miss
Genevieve Russell, chairman;

Clark, Mrs. Claude Kells, Mrs.
Sidney Schlesinger. Wayne Gor
don. Mrs. Henry Meyer and Mrs.
William Craycroft.
Frat Names Smith
To Council Body
Dr. G. Herbert Smith, president
ef Willamette University, was
elected member at large on the
general council of Omicron Delta
Kappa fraternity at the recent
biennial meeting in St. Louis.
Omicron Delia Kappa, leading
upperciass nonorary lor men stu
dents, was established on the Wil
lamette campus in 1954. To date
there are 8!) chapters of the hon
orary in the United States. .
Smith was appointed successor
to Barry Bingham, editor of the
Louisville Courier Journal and the
Times, who had completed the six
year term of office the position
carries. Other member at large of
ODK is Dr. Virgil M, Hancher,
president of the State University
of Iowa.
The kitchen facilities at MacLaren
School for Boys, the Oregon State
Tuberculosis Hospital and at Hill
crest will also be visited.

has leased 30,000 square feet of
warehouse space in the building
on Front street, formerly occupied
by Hurit Foods.
The building was vacated by
Hunt Foods last November, inci
dent to closing out its Northwest
operations.

New Manager
Aide Arrives
Donald Hitchman, who succeeds
Charles A. Barclay as assistant to
the Salem city manager, arrived
early Thursday and is ready to
take over the position at once. He
was being shown about City Hall
I by Barclay during the day.
I Hitchman, graduate of Willam
ette University and post-graduate
of Syracuse University, comes here
from Pendleton where he resigned
as city recorder to accept the Sa
lem position.
Barclay, who has held city office
here for several years, resigned
because of personal business to
which he wants to give more at
tention. ;
Gould Picked for
Oregon Ag Post
William Gould has been named
assistant informational representa
tive in the Oregon Department of
Agriculture.
Gould, who came from radio sta
tion KRCO, Prineville, will handle
department news dissemination.
He attended the University of Ore
gon for .two years in journalism
and since then has been with radio
stations in Prineville and The
Dalles.
The new assistant and his fam
il. have already moved to Salem.
The Goulds have two sons and one
daughter.
S.W.Robb Named
Forest Chairman
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Special) -S.
W. Robb of Willamette Valley
Lumber Co., Dallas, has been
named 1957 chairman of the Ore
gon Committee of American Forest
Products Industries, Inc., the wood
Using industries' forestry education
arm.
The appointment of Mr. Robb. a
Salem resident, was announced by
Vcrtrees Young, president of AFPI,
the national Tree Farm sponsor.
Man Wounds Self
In Target-Shoot
Mishap in Salem
Leland Bristol, 21, 1354 S. 12th
St., suffered a non-serious bullet
wound in the right leg Wednesday
in a target-shooting accident, the
Marion County Sheriffs Office re
ported. Bristol was target shooting in
the Roberts area, southwest of Sa
lem, when his pistol went off ac
cidentally just after he had put a
shell in it, deputies said.
City first aidmen treated the
wound and Bristol was taken to
Salem Memorial Hospital for fur
ther treatment. The wound was
described as minor.
BEND DOCTOR HEADS BOARD
PORTLAND (UP) The Slate
Board of Medical Examiners said
today that Dr. Max H. Heming
way of Bend had been named
president for the coming year. Dr.
George Page of Portland was
named secretary-treasurer.

anne Foster, 26, is divorcing tele
vision writer Joel Murcott, 42.
In a suit filed yesterday Miss
Foster charged cruelty and asked
for custody of their twin son and
daughter, Jason and Jodi, 14
months. They married Oct. 15,
1954.

Boys Damage,
Remove Signs,
Get Probation
Five boys were placed on pro
bation after appearing in Marion
County Juvenile Court Wednesday
on charges of removal or damage
of road sign posts.
Arresting deputies said the boys,
all 15 or 16, had taken street and
town directional signs from near
the St. Louis and Salem Heights
areas and dumped them in a
ditch. They also took an adver
tising sign from 'the Hollywood

man, 27, was charged with grand
larceny after police said they
caught him trying to load a deer
into the trunk of his car. The
deer was a stone lawn decoration
in front of a Madison Heights
home.

4 Cars Bump,
Three Towed
One car struck the back of a
stopped auto, knocking it forward
into another and that one into a
fourth car on the Salem bypass
Wednesday, state police reported.
Drivers were listed as H. S. Pat
terson, Seattle; Clayton Miles Ras
mussen, Tangent, E a r I e Louis
Caldwell, O s w e g o; and Alfred
Brewer, Portland. Brewer was list
ed as the driver of the car that
failed to stop in time.

Won by R. White
Robert White of Tigard, senior
at Willamette University, has ac
cepted a graduate teaching assist
antship at Oregon State College in
the math department.
Teaching seven hours weekly in
the freshman' math division,
White's asslstantshlp pays $1,400
plus tuition for the coming year.
He Is the son of Harry M. White
of Tigard. ,

said. All the cars but Patterson's
had to be towed away, they said.

meeting. He succeeds Gordon Bar
