Salem, Oregon, Wednesday, April 17, 1957 Page 2 Section i THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Salem Acquires Vet Pitcher; George Due In Y I mm Senators to Battle Visalia Again Today Salem Tops Las Vegas for 5th Spring Win WASCO. Calif. (Spcrial)-Man-ager Bill Brenner will be bringing back seven pitchers instead o six, and six veterans instead of five, when the Salem Senators leave for home Saturday. That came about because of the surprise acquisition of Willie .Neal, veteran leflhander whom the Sen ators purchased yesterday from Plainview, Tex., of the Class B Southwestern League where he had a 1 5-6 record last year. Neal stood out in a five-inning effort last night against Las Ve gas, allowing only two hits. The Senators won their filth spring ex hibition, 4-3, against three defeats. Price Came Down Brenner explained that Plainview had been asking "a lot of dough" for Neal "but we worked around until we got him for a reasonable price." He looked "awfully good" last night. This news was accompanied by the hint that I.ee Franklin's pitch ing arm has developed troubles. He had been counted on as one of the six on the Senator staff. Northwest taague allows only five veterans but Brenner said that one, probably a veteran pitcher, may be sold before Salem breaks camp here. Released after last night's game was Boh Brown, rookie catcher. This leaves Harvey Koepf and on Hanggie. , - George In Today George Malilc, shortstop, prob ably won't come down because of his studies at Willamette Univer sity but will join the club at home. Andy George is due in today to start pitching. The Salem rookie outfielder, Jerry Gregg, was to leave today for Fort Lewis to get his discharge from the Army. The remaining spring schedule: Visalia here, tonight; Las Vegas at Wasco Thursday night; against Yakima at Porlerville Pnday night: against Redding all stars Sunday en route home. The Senators compiled a 4-1 lead by the end of the fourth inning as pitcher Neal gave up only a pair of hits to the Arizona-Mexico League squad. Neal was succeeded by a left handed rookie, Jean Skidgel, in Ihc sixth frame, and the Wrang lers promptly reached him for two runs, lie walked four. But he con tained the Las Vegas nine the rest of the way and gave up only five hits in his four-inning stint. Long Home Run It was the hilling of Rob Camp bell, Karl Kuehl and F.rv Knorzcr which paved the way to the Salem victory. The Senators posted a run In the second inning on hits by Kuehl and Campbell, who con tinues to lead Salem batsmen in the "Grapefruit League". In the fourth frame, Knorzer clubbed a 400-foot two-run home run over the left center field fence. and Kuehl and Campbell again combined to score the Senators' third run of the inning. Kuehl had a single and Campbell a double. Kuehl and Campbell each gar nered a pair of hits, Salem Lai Vegas . ...010 .100 0004 II 1 ...001 002 0OO3 7 0 Neal, Sklrigel () and Brown. Koepf (Of. Witte Wins Again; Tag Team Decision Goes to Mean Guys John Witte has found profes sional wrestling to be considerably different from the same sport in college, but he made his all-round strength and know-how pay off Tuesday night at tho Salem Ar mory for a victory over Bull Mon tana in the card's special event. A big crowd turned out to see Witte gain the triumph as Mon tana lost on a foul. It pleased the patrons no little Witte, a football All-American and a champion wrestler for Ore gon Stale, dropped Montana with a flying tackle, but missed on a second try. Montana then simply stepped on Witlc's throat and re fused to get off when ordered by Pierre DoGlane, Montana was disqualified and Witlc had made his Salem debut a success. In the main event, Hcrbie Free man and Luigi Mnccra, Northwest tag team champions, lost on dis qualilicalion to Gentleman Ed Francis and Wild Bill Savage. Luther Lindscy, who had no part in the mainer, was the cause of Ihc disqualification. When Francis and Savage were combining lo rough up Freeman, Lindscy hopped into the ring, clobbered both Fran cis and Savage and the place was in an uproar. But Caves In Brad Lucas, a junior pitcher from Grants Pass, nursed a no hit, no-run game for eight innings Tuesday at McCulloch field, then went into a tailspin as the Univer sity of Oregon crushed his bid for fame and tromped the Willamette Bearcats, 9-2. Until the awful ninth inning, Lucas had faced only 26 men and not a Duck reached further than second base. But at the start of the ninth, Oregon pitcher Ron Whitaker, who should have felt some sympathy for what Lucas was trying to do, poked out a single to end the no-hitter. One batter later, the game was tied at 2-2, for Len Read hit a home run. Singles then came from Wimp Hastings and Jim Pifhcr. and Hastings subsequently scored on an error. Sports Report By CHUCK JOICE One of the best features of the 1957 Northwest league schedule Is that it has the non-holiday Mondays blank. Peculiarly, enough, one reason this is such a treat is that they won t all be idle. It s great to have a night of rest for everyone con cerned and it's most desirable to have that coincide with the Coast League's off night, thus making some good exhibition games possible. It's said that Seattle's Ras ters and the San Diego Padres will put Into Waters Park for exhibition games this year which will be some very tasty frosting on what looks to be a hearty schedule right dovn the line. With six teams in the league the schedule can be balanced. No more will we have those long, costly layoffs as the odd team on the week's schedule as was the case when Spokaner was around as a seventh team. The team will play the popular snlil WPlr with nnn Ipam horn for single games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and another moving in for Friday, Saturday and a Sun day doublehcadcr. At other times a home stand will begin on Friday night and conclude the following Thursday night with the Monday oil: ' - SALEM OLDSTERS BEST SINCE THE OLD DAYS The schedule, thus, appears very good and, certainly, the reports out of California have been most encouraging as to the team. Seattle has dropped off some very promising kids and Bill Brenner. Vern Kindsfather, Bob Duretto, Jack Dunn and George Matilc make up the Dcst nuccius oi veterans since tar back into the Western International league days. So, about all that remains Is for the fans to gobble up those season tickets which are so handy for steady-viewing family or the guy who just wants to come and go when he pleases for a few Innings at a time. And in case collection day, April 15, was too rugged they're available on time. ROSBURG, ROBINSON AND PETERSON GOING GREAT -Some familiar names got off to a very good start in the Pacific Coast league this year. Ex-Senators who did O.K. were Floyd Robin son wun an opening aay nomcr lor san uiego, Buaay reierson snow ing his usual scrap as the Vancouver shortstop and Russ Rosburg of last year's) Salem team with Sacramento. Rosburg had thrce-for-five opening day and followed up with a couple of home runs over the weekend. It looks like he's made the grade as left fielder for the. Sacs. The news that we enjoyed most .was that concerning Mickey Coen, the former Willamette pitcher and football linebacker. He may or may not be ready to hang on in the PCL after a 17-9 season with Amanita in the Class A Western league last year, but he's off to a big start. TOUGH TO IMPROVE ON COEN'S PACE The former Roscburg kid worked four scoreless innings of relief in a lost cause against Seattle on opening day. Then, last Saturday, he took the hill against the Rainiers for innings 8 through 11. The Suds picked up but two hits off him and nary a run. So, when Nippy Jones hit one out of the lot in the Uth off Larry Janscn, Coen had himself a 1-0 record ind a zero ERA in eight innings. Coen, by the way, took his regular turn against the fabulous Continued on page 3, columns 1 and 2) Thomas Makes Dehut as Pilol SALINAS. Calif.
