Heads often are bare in this sunshiny land, but this time of year the ladies borrow some el egance from eastern cities and blossom out in bonnets. And this season they're going in for a new sensation hats made of real flowers. If the bees follow Jane Russell into church next Sunday, it's be cause her huge natural straw floppy sailor hat will be covered with real daffodils, white daisies Crosby Files 3 Libel Suits PORTLAND tUP) Clyde C. Crosby, Oregon Teamsters Union representative, today filed three libel suits In Circuit Court asking $900,000 damages against the Ore gonian, two of its reporters and racketeer James B. Elkins. Crosby Is under indictments on several counts handed down by vice probing Multnomah county (rand juries. The reporters named as defend ants are Wallace Turner and Wil liam Lambert, who wrote a scries of stories in the Orcgonian last spring linking Crosby and other Teamster officials with racketeer ing in Portland. Crosby listed six separate caus es of action in his three suits. He asks $50,000 general damages and $100,000 punitive damages on each cause. He cited several articles in the Oregonian concerning him as the basis for the suits. - Elkins, a recent star witness before a Senate Rackets Investi gating Committee, was the chief source of information in the Ore gonian series. Another $300,000 libel suit which Crosby filed against the Oregonian several months ago is still pend ing in Circuit Court. and blue cornflowers a $42.50 number. Whiting Sisters Outfitted Easter Day Margaret Whiting will wear a pink hat covered with huge pink cabbage roses, the kind ants like. Sister Barbara Whiting's Easter bonnet will be a small sailor hat trimmed with white daisies. Barbara Hale and Barbara Law rence also will go to church in real blossoms pink cabbage roses on dark green small hats. These bonnets arc the brainchild of a creative florist, Stanley Me deiros. He wins notices each Christmas by whipping up yule trees of velvet and jewels for movie stars. Come Easter his Beverly Hills shop is a-flutter with celebrities and rich ladies from Texas buying the hats he makes of real flowers. Refrigeration Necessary "They smell nice, look real and last for three or four days If kept in the refrigerator," declared the florist. "And they're much smart er to wear than corsages that just leave holes in dresses." Any female desiring a live bon net can take an old hat to her florist for trimming, he advises. Between wearings the hat should be sprinkled with water or wrapped in oil and popped into the refrigerator. Other real flower hats he's made for film folk at $27.60 up include a huge pink picture hat trimmed with violets and red roses and a tiny pink chiffon not with a big bunch of lilacs trailing down one side. - HE CARRIES WEIGHT FT. CARSON, Colo. IAV-Prlvalcs In Company I, 30th Infantry Regi ment, don't pull any practical Jones on tnclr sergeant. Tho rea son is obvious. The' company's sergeant is Henry Wyatt. Sgt Wyatt weighs 200 pounds, stands 6 feet, 8 Inches, wears a size 15 shoe and measures IB Inches around the neck. And he's still growing. Beaver Gives UpatMcNary UMATILLA, Ore. W No long er eager, Joe the beaver has packed his dam-rcpair kit and moved elsewhere on the Colum bia River, leaving man to make his own dam repairs at McNary. All last week, Joe kept busily at work trying to repair a "leak" in the giant dam. The "leak" was the dam's navigation lock, and evorytimc Joe had it fixed, opening of the lock carried away Joe's work at setting up his own vast preserve. The days of frustration finally took their toll. Attendants said over the weekend Joe "chuckrd tho task and swam off In disgust" heading downstream in the wake of a tug. Thcro may be better days ahend (or Joe. Downstream lies the recently-activated Tho Dalles Dam. It, too, has "leaks" that need looking into. Jury Pick in Elkins Trial Set Tuesday PORTLAND IMA federal court jury to try Portland racketeer Jim Elkins on a wiretap charge will be picked Tuesday, Dist. Judge William G. East said Mon day in denying a motion for posroonement. After the jury is sworn, he said, he will dismiss it until the defense has had time to make copies under his supervision of the tape recordings which the government says violate the law against mak ing secret recordings of telephone conversations. These recordings, which take about a day and a half to play are separate from those Elkins turned over to The Orcgonian a year ago to touch off that news paper's charges of corruption and vice here. They were of room conversations, not telephone talk. They led to charges against Dist. Atty. William Langlcy, who Sat urday was convicted of failure to prosecute gamblers. Elkins, and his aide, Raymond F. Clark, were indicted . on the federal charge when a raid turned up the new recordings. A new attorney showed up for Elkins today and asked more time to get familiar with the case. The judge rejected this. "J DONALD DUC By Walt Dliney lil ACROSS 1 1. Recoils I . Of the sun II.
