Meier & Frank Story
Began in Year 1857
Meier & Frank history began in I progress, the company purchased
the spring of 1857, when Aaron the Portland hotel site, demolished
Meier, a 26-year-old native of j the hotel and opened a two-level
j j . j ana 1 Pining facility there, on a leased-
nocned a dry-goods store in 35-by-60-foot
rented quarters at Front
and Yamhill streets. Portland at
that time had about 1300 residents.
o-.iu ine community s economic
base rested on the dwindling fur
trade, the newly-arrived farmer
settlers in the Willamette valley,
and the mines of eastern Oregon
and Idaho.
In 1863, Meier returned to Ger
many and married Jeanette
Hirsch. He came back to Port
land with his bride, and experi
enced trying years until he put
the small store on a firm footing.
In 1870 he was joined bv Emil
Frank, and two years later by
Emil's brother, Sigmund. Emil
later lelt to become a partner in
a wholesale drug company, but
Sigmund remained to become a
partner in the store, and principal
officer upon the death of Meier
in 1889.
Moved First In 1885
The year 1885 saw the first of
Meier & Frank's major moves and
expansions. The company aban
doned its original location and
moved one block west, erecting a
new two-story building on First
Street, between Yamhill and Tay-
Alor, running through to Second.
; : 'Later acquisitions gave the store
openings on Taylor and Yamhill,
but the store did not occupy the
entire block.
In 1898, Sigmund Frank took the
dariny step of building a new five-
story structure on Fifth Street, be
tween Alder and Morrison, cover.
ing a full half-block. This building
was then considerably west of the
main retail district, and many
thought Frank was foolish. But
history amply justified his fore
sight, as the Meier & Frank loca
tion eventually became part of the
Heart of the Portland retail dis
, trict.
Expansions Since 1900
Since then. Meier k Frank has
noted the following expansions
A new 10-slory ahnex at Sixth
and Alder, opened in 1909;
Demolition of the five - story
building, and erection of a 14-story
building with two basement levels
on the same site, opened in 1915:
Addition of a new section at the
corner of Sixth and Morrison, and
completion of the whole building
to the 14-story level, in 1932;
Opening of the new $8,000,000
store in Salem in October, 1955.
In addition to this record of
operation basis, in 1932; purchased
a 60-acre tract at N.E. 122nd
Avenue and Sandy Boulevard for
a Parkrose shopping center; and
announced plans for the major de
partment store unit in the
projected Lloyd Center.
It is planned to begin construc
tion on the Lloyd Center store
this summer.
Sigmund Frank, who died in
1910, was succeeded as president
of the company Tjy Abe Meier,
older son of Aaron Meier. Abe,
whose only "office" was at the
store's sales counters, served until
his death in 1930. He was followed
by his younger brother. Julius
Meier, who was elected governor
ot uregon the same year.
Aaron Frank Takes Over
Because Julius' time was oc
cupied wholly by his official duties.
Aaron Frank, son of Sigmund
Frank, became general manager
oi ine store, and in addition as
sumed the presidency when Julius
Meier fliea in 1937. Aaron Frank
still holds both titles and remains
in active control of the company's
atiairs.
Since Sigmund Frank married
Aaron Meier's daughter. Fannie,
in 1885, Aaron Frank is the grand
son of Aaron Meier, as well as
being the son of Meier's partner.
Other members of the Meier and
Frank families still active in the
store's affairs are Allen Meier, son
of Abe Meier, a member of the
Board of Directors; Julius Meier
Jr., better known as Jack, who
is secretary of the corporation and
administrative assistant to man
agement: Richard Frank, elder
son of Aaron, who is treasurer;
and Gerald Frank, younger son
of Aaron, manager of the Salem
store.
Family Still Controls Slock
Meier & Frank company is now
a public corporation, although a
majority of its lock is still held by
members of the Meier k Frank
families. Its annual sales volume
is approximately $50,000,000,
putting it in the top rank of Amer
ican department stores. It serves
180,000 credit customers, and
handles some 15,000,000 transac
tions annually. With completion of
the Lloyd center store, Meir k
Frank will operate about 1,500,000
square feet of space in its oiling,
warehousing and administrative
departments. It employs about
4000 people.

WASHINGTON W - An Ameri
can newsman who defied a ban
on travel to Red China protested
to Congress Friday the State De
partment's silence on his applica
tion for a renewed passport.
William Worthy, 35-year-old re
porter for The Baltimore Afro-
american, said he has seen how
totalitarian governments restrict
newsmen and . declared:
"Neither as a newsman nor as
a citizen do I want to see even
the seeds of such controls planted
in this country."
In testimony prepared for the
Senate s Constitutional Rights sub
committee,- Worthy said that in
reaffirmation of our healthy anti-
authoritarian traditions, I want
my passport and I want It now.'
Worthy was among the first wit
nesses to testify as the subcom
mittee opened an inquiry into
State Department passport poli
cies. Edward J. Ennis, general coun
sel ot the American Civil Liberties
Union, told the senators State De
partment refusal of passports to
reporters seeking to visit Red Chi
na is an "arbitrary and novel
censorship, with a strong impact
on freedom of the press.
Ennis said the department's in
action on Worthy's application for
passport renewal raises the ques
tion of whether the correspondent
is to be denied as some kind of
executive punishment for his past
trip to China."
Worthy was one of three Ameri
can newsmen who went to the
Chinese mainland last December
in defiance of the State Depart
ment ban on such trips. The other
two are Look magazine staffers.
