Jackson Asks
Higher Tariff
On Japan Ply
WASHINGTON to Sen. .lack
son ID-Washi said Monday he is
asking the Federal Tariff Com
mission to recommend to Presi
dent Eisenhower that "protection
be granted" to the Pacific North
west plywood industry which he
said is hard-hit by Japanese im
ports. In a letter to the commission
Jackson said imports from Japan
have "increased sonic 4,000 per
cent since 1950," while many ply
wood plants in Washington ore on
four-day working schedules anil
may be cut to three-day work
weeks.
"Tho amount of plywood now
being imported from Japan would
keep ten 300-man domestic plants
operating, Jackson said.
In a separate letter to Secre
tary of Slate Dulles, Jacksnn
asked the Stale Department to
back his appeal to the Tariff Com
mission.

Sonic 20,000 police were on duty
throughout the country and spe
cial riot squads were alerted in
the capital. But (here were no
early reports of violence.
The strikes were scheduled lo
last from half a day to three
days, depending on the industry.
The General Council of Japan
Trade Unions fSoliyo), leftist la
