Studies Problems
AMITY (Special) -The Amity
fireman's auxiliary had a special
meeting this week, in the home ec
onomics room at the high school
with Thelma Shields acting in the
capacity of hostess.
Alice Sutherland presided at the
business meeting, which was call
cd to discuss promotion of ticket
sales and advertising for the forth
coming fireman's benefit variety
show. Reports were made by Don
na Johnson and Ethel Darnall on
the civil defense meeting held re
cently in McMinnvillc.

by a piece of steel while at work
for Courtemanchc in McMinnvillc
He submitted to surgery at St.
Vincents Hospital in Portland and
is getting along well.
Reunion Planned

Mrs. Kenneth Brown arc planning
a family reunion to include Chief
and Mrs. Lloyd L. Hunter and
sons, Robert and Richard, , who
have, recently returned to the

Brown arc sisters. Mrs. Hunter
and the boys will occupy the home
of her mother, Mrs. Don Upjohn,
until Chief Hunter obtains housing
at his new station at Tongue Point
near Astoria.
WARNERS HAVE SON
WEBFOOT (Spccial)-Mr. and
Mrs. Marlon Warner arc the par
ents of a son born Feb. 14 at
Salem General hospital. The hoy
weighed eight pounds and has been
named Steven Marion and has two
older sisters, Pamela and Tracy.
Palcrnal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Clarence Warner of
Webfoot; the baby was born on
their wedding anniversary. Ma
ternal grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. llalc Hendrjckson of Union-

Pvt. Landis Champ
In Fort Ord Shoot
AUMSVILLE (Special) Pvt.
Eugene Landis, the son of Mrs.
William Dcgeer, now stationed at
Ford Ord, Calif., has won cham
pion rifleman, competing with 140
other rifleman. He is a member
of Company B. 2nd. Inf. 5th Divi
sion. Pvt. Landis is a graduate of Cas
cade Union High School in 11)56 and
enlisted in the Army in January
of this year. He won a marksman
ship badge and a trophy.
Rheumatic Fever
Hits Family Twice
STAYTON (Special) A patient
in Santiam Memorial hospital for
the past two months has been Leo
Wagner of Mchama, an employe
of the Frcrcs Lumber company of
Lyons. He was taken to his home
recently but his illness, which
has been diagnosed as rheumatic
fever, forced him to return to the
hospital within a few days.
A son, Nick Wagner, 10, has
returned to his classes at Stayton
Union high school, after having a
siege of rheumatic fever which
kept him in bed a few weeks.
Amity Pair Join Navy
AMITY (Special )-Gcnc Ehlcrs,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ehlcrs
and Wesley Kosta, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Oliver Kosta have recently
been notified of their acceptance
into the U. S. Navy. Ehlcrs and
Kosla will report to Portland on
March 6, where they will join
other recruits for the journey to
San Diego, Calif., to undergo basic
training.

school in the Elks National foun
dation "Most Valuable Student"
scholarship contest. They are Gail
Marine, Linda Peterson. Allen
Perry and Pat Whitmore. Perry is
student body president of the local
high school. Winner of the Clacka
mas county contest will be
awarded a (400 scholarship and
will be entered in a district con
test, with the winner to compete
then In the stole contest for a $GO0
scholarship.
Nominations first were made by
a faculty committee, then submit-
ted to the senior class and the
junior class who could make addi
tions to the list. Only seniors arc
eligible to participate in the schol
arship contest.

Sets Open House
SILVERTON (Special) The
long anticipated "open house"
at the new Mark Twain school
In Silvcrton will be an all-day
event Monday. Parents and
friends arc invited to inspect the '
school and classrooms during
the afternoon with a formal pro
gram and presentation of the
school In the evening from 7 to
9 p.m. The evening will Include
a coffee hour.

mens Auxiliary held its February
meeting recently in Carmy's cafe
with Mrs. Nina Talmadgc, hostess.
The business meeting was con
ducted by recently installed presi
dent, Alice Sutherland. Ethel Dar
nall and Donna Johnson were ap
pointed to attend the Civil De
fense meeting in McMinnvillc for
instruction on packing emergency
food kits. The Auxiliary has been
requested to take care of this

Heart Fund Aided

coffee hours have been held for
the benefit of the Heart Fund
drive, with Mrs. Wilson Fox, Mrs.

being hostesses. A canvassing
team of girls from the high school
will assist the Willamina chairman

drill team has been organized at
Amity high school under the direc

teams first public appearance will
take place Feb. 26, for. the home
coming game.

Farm Contest
AMITY (Special) Nominated by
the Yamhill County Fair Board as
one of Yamhill County 5 oulstand
ing young farmers of the year is
Marvin Dercave of Amity. The
contest sponsored by the McMinn
villc Chamber of Commerce is held
annually
A total of six farmers have been
chosen from Ihe county and from
these one will be selected to rep
resent the county in state compc
tition. The stale winner will enter
Ihe national finals to be held in
Durham, N.C., in April.
Dcrcavcs is 26 years old and
manages a dairy farm in partner
ship with his father, he also raises
grain on two other rented farms a
total of 320 acres in cuhtvation.

Amity and was active in the Fu
lure Farmers of America club
while in high school.
Nominations were based on utili
zation of conservative practices in
farming and activity in community
life and farm organizations.

Haskins Held on
Wisconsin Count
DALLAS (Special) Albert
Henry Haskins, 28, was in the
Polk county jail Wednesday after
being arrested Tuesday on a Wis
consin warrant.
Haskins was charged with ob
taining title to property of another
with intention to deceive. The
charge involves a motorcycle Has
kins allegedly purchased usine a
different name.
Bail was set at $500 in justice
court for the Buena Vista man.
Haskins said he was undecided
about waiving extradition.
