Big 3 Talks Have Monotony Ring
By WARREIN ROGERS JR.

Plead Innocent
NEW VOKK ln Two men and
a 'woman charscd with spyinc for
Russia pleaded innocent yester
day and were ordered held with
out hail for a trial possibly be
ginning March 18.
T The government had asked con
tinuation of $100,000 bail each for
the trio. Jack Sohlc, . his wife
Myra, and Jacob Albam.
U.S. Atty. Paul Williams said
the government was willing to
jtart the trial March 18, hut "it
la Ihe obvious intent of the de
fendants to put off the trial as
Ions as possible."
Federal Judijc Gregory F. Noon
in scheduled March 11 for argu
ments on the fixing of the trial
date.
NW To Grow
As Aluminum'
PORTLAND Oil As aluminum
grows, so will the Pacific North
west, Keen Johnson of the Reyn
olds Metals Co. said yesterday.
A vice president of that firm,
he told the Rotary Club Ihe alum
inum industry is 10 limes larger
than before World War II and
predicted it will double the next
decade.
' He spoke of growing use of
aluminum in the automobile in
dustry and in construction.
Johnson said his company now
employs 1)00 persons at its Trout
dale, Ore., plant and 500 at Long
View, Wash. He reported Iho com
pany payrolls at $4,noo.ooo annual
ly at Troutdale and $2,900,000 at
Longvlew.
Ulysses S. Grant's second Inaug
ural Ball was $20-a-tlcket admis
sion ceremony.
British and French leaders, then
Prime Minister Winston Churchill
and Premier Joseph Laniel.
Big Three unity, European de
fense, German reunification, dis
armament. Middle Kast tension
all these were awaiting resolution
at the December ViS Bermuda
talks.
And they still are, as Kiscnhow
er prepares for his Feb. 211-27
meeting in Washington with
French Premier Guy Alollct and
his March 21-24 conference ut Ilcr
mudn with British Prime Minister
Harold Macmillan.
The JUKI Bermuda talks were
held, it was said at Hie lime, be
cause Churchill wanted them held
to demonstrate Western unity and
set Hit stage for a Big Four meet
ing with Russia.
'Ihe Western alliance again Is
badly sprung, this time by the
British-French attack on Fgypt
against strong American objec
tions. Again, too, talk of a Big
Four meeting is in the air.
Churchill dominated the 1953
Bermuda talks, This time Eisen
hower is the veteran.
In 1953 European defenses were
staggering in the face of French
opposition to rearming West Ger
many. That particular hurdle has
been crossed.
But European defenses are
threatened again. This time it is
primarily because Britain, in eco
nomic straits, is trying to cut
down on its four-division contribu
tion. The West German contribu
tion is slow in materializing, and
France's expedition in Algeria is
a weakening factor too.
German reunification still Is a
burning issue.
The years since 1953 have seen
much disarmament talk, but there
have been no concrete disarma
ment agreements.
Middle East tension in 1953 pri
marily centered on Israeli-Jordan
border skirmishes. Today it has
assumed gigantic proportions,
with the Suez Canal clogged, oil
pipelines destroyed. Russian arms
and inilucnce permeating the
area.
The French have a saying for
it: Everything changes, nothing
changes.
HARD TO DETECT
Medics Warn of
Wh iplash In juries
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS,
W. Va. Ud A panel of surgeons
today recommended that persons
injured in automobile accidents be
examined for possible hidden
"whiplash injuries" those
caused by a sudden snapping back
of the head. The surgeons said
these often occur when a car is
struck from the rear. '
The panel said in statements
prepared for delivery that whip
lash injuries arc common because
many collisions involve cars
standing still. The discussion look
place at the end of Ihe Mid-Atlantic
Regional Meeting of the U. S.
Section, International Colics.) of
Surgeons.
vice Adm. Ross T. Mctnliic of
Chicago, executive director of the
International College of burgeons
and former White House physician
to President Franklin D. Roose
velt, said a whiplash injury may
have such little effect at the time
it occurs that the injured person
gives It no attention.
"It is only when the symptoms
occur at a later date that the pa
tient comes to the orthopedist or
neurosurgeon for assistance," he
said, adding that such injuries
often involve the nerves in the un
protected back of the neck.
Listed symptoms include pain of
a neuralgic type over a large part
of the neck or headaches, often
with some degree of concussion.
If the force of the strike is at an
angle. Dr. Mclntirc said, a severe
rotation of Hie neck will cause oth
er symptoms, including muscular
spasms, dizziness, nausea and in
ability to see properly.
"Very often symptoms do not
arise, in cases where there have
been no fractures, for a period
of many years," He added. "Ear
ly treatment is important and that
means early diagnosis. Every in
jury of the cervical spine should
bo investigated promptly, for it is
at this period that much can be
done."
