Woman Receives
Grandson's Note;
Origin Antarctica
A message that traveled many
thousands of miles before reach
Inff Its destination has been re
ceived by a Salem grandmother.
The point of origin was "Opera
tion Deep Freeze" in Antarctica
and Merrill D. Moon, Jr., grand
son of Mrs. Llla Moon, 1295
Oxford St., was the sender.
Mrs. Moon reports that the
message was picked up by the
American Red Cross, Syracuse,
N.Y., and was relayed to the
Home Service department of the
Seattle-King County Red Cross
chapter.
Young Moon Is a seaman
aboard the Coast Guard Ice
breaker Northwlnd. lie reports
that he Is enjoying his experi
ence even though it took the
Northwlnd five days to smash
her way through 40 miles of
heavy lee.
.7 Moon called his grandmother
late last week from Wellington,
New Zealand, while his ship
was In port for repairs.
6Y' Member Drive
To Be Continued
When the "victory dinner,"
marking the termination of the
annual YMCA membership drive,
was held Thursday night, it was
determined that the goal or 1,000
had not been reached. So it was
decided to extend the campaign
another week.
Those engaged in the effort re
ported 911 new and renewal mem
berships. This means that the as
soclation has approximately 4,000
persons on its rolls, reported Gen
eral Secretary Gus Moore.
During the drive the business
men's division and the senior
men's section exceeded their quota.
The business men reported 118 new
members or 18 more than their
quota, while the senior men's
groups checked in 235 names, or
35 more than theirs.
Top individual achievement was
turned in by James Wiles oi the
senior men's division with 28
names., Others who reported 15
memberships were Paul Bale, Lee
Shinn and Steve Brodic of the
senior division, and Lance Edlund,
Larry Emerson and Darwin Biwar,
boys division. 1
Senate Considers
Veteran Charter
A measure, which would grant
a congressional charter to the Vet
erans of World War I, has been
introduced In the United States
senate according to word received
here.
Frank W. Young, national depu
ty chief of staff of the organiza
tion, received a letter from Sen.
Richard L. Neuberger stating that
me bin Had been introduced and is
now in the- hands of the senate
judiciary committee.
