Wall Street
NEW YORK A declining
stock market scraped close to its
1956 bottom then reoevcred part
ially in slow trading late Friday.
Volume for the day was esti
mated at around 2,000.000 shares
compared with 1,840,000 Thursday
On average, the market was
only a little above the. 1 o w
reached Jan. 23, 1956. It has ral
lied from approximately that level
every time it has been "tested
since then.
The question in Wall Street was
whether it would rally again or
break precedent by piercing this
downside barrier to establish a
lower level from which to advance.
A number of blue chips hit new
1956-57 lows., Among them was
General Motors which broke un
der 40 for the first time since the
stock was split 3-for-l in 1955. But
the decline was only fractional
and GM was selling ex-dividend,
which would normally call for a
dip.
