Saxons Win 5th Straight; Big One Friday

Capital Journal Sports Writer
The South Salem Saxons won
their fifth straight game Tuesday
night by walloping Milwaukie 64-48
at South Salem and now look for
ward to the Friday night district
game with North Salem.
The Friday night contest will
be the first counting game between
the two teams after the crosstown
schools split a pair of December
tilts.
Hon Kussetl and Dan Moore, the
two point making machines for the
Saxons, were both running at high
efficiency with Russell getting 21
points again while Moore was
cutting in 16.
, The Mustangs, coached by
George Crandall, went into the
game with a 6-2 record, but Bob
Trelstad bottled up 5-6 Con Pek
kola, the Mustangs' leading scorer,
and the visitors didn't have a
chance. Fekkola had only" four
points.
Close at 18-17
Cal Tichenor, a 6-3 transfer from
Klamath Falls, opened the scoring
for Milwaukie with a long one
bander, but Ed Lewis came back
with a bucket and Moore put in
a jump shot and a layin to give

front, 16-12.
Milwaukie cut the score to 18-17,
but Russell and Moore scored
(even straight points to make it
25-17. Milwaukie scored five points
in the final 30 seconds of the half
to make the halftime score 32-29
in favor of the Saxons.
Tom Giddings brought the Mus
tangs within a point by hitting
on a jump shot, but Russell went
berserk, getting 11 points in 2:36
to put the Saxons safely in the
lead. South led S3-42 at the start
of the final period and kept pulling
away gradually.
Russell missed a free throw early
in the fourth period to break a
string of 24 straight that extended
back for four games.
Out-Rebound Visitors
The Saxons, although shorter,
outrebounded the visitors by get
ting 29 rebounds to 24 for Mil
waukie. Milwaukie outshot the
Saxons from the floor, hitting on
18 of 30 for a .462 average. The
Saxons had a .433 average, con
necting on 26 of 60.
The South Salem junior varsity
were edged 35-34 in the prelimi
nary game by the Milwaukie JV s.
The loss broke a four game win
ning streak. Jerome Goertzen led
the losers as usual with 12.

This collision between South Salem's Don Wat

only a small part of what the Saxons had to go
through to win a non-league game at South Tues
day night. Watkins missed the basket and was
dumped on the floor by the crash, with Mustang

a combination field manager and
business manager.
Bill Brenner, Interviewed
Tuesday afternoon for the open
positions, was to call George
Paulus, committee chairman,
about his decision.
Brenner Is the one wanted
most from a list of 10 applicants
and the only one to be inter
viewed so far. He was a pitch
ing coach for the Seattle Rain-
lers last season, finishing the
season as manager when Luke
Sewcll was fired.'
He played or managed Bcl
lingham, Lewlston and Vancou
ver in the old Western Interna
tional league as pitcher or
catcher, winning 21 games in
1952 with the Broncs, 22 in 1953
with the Broncs and 21 In 1954
with Vancouver.
Brenner also was mentioned as
a prospect for the job at We
natchee. The Salem position
would be year-around work.

balanced scoring attack, defeated
the Springfield High Millers, 63-57,
in a non-league basketball game
here Tuesday night.
Corvallis trailed 30-32 at the half,
but rallied to cop the win in the
final canto.
Bruce Fleming hit 16 tallies for
the winners, but yielded game
honors to Springfield's Wally
Knecht's 19.
The Miller Bees won the opener,

Sabers Seize 49-37
Win After Losing
Early Lead
St. Boniface put on a tremendous
third-quarter drive but wilted in
the stretch as the Serra Sabers
raced to a 49-37 non-conference
basketball victory Tuesday night at
St. Joseph s gymnasium.
Behind 22-13 at the end of the
half, the Saints of Sublimity tight
ened their defense and unleashed
their offense to earn a 27-27 tie
shortly before the end of the third
quarter.
But Serra's high-scoring Denny
Frank popped home a field goal
to give the Sabers a 29-27 bulge at
the period s end, and his team took
up the cudgels from there, pouring
in 20 points in the final quarter.
St. Boniface was limited to ten
points in the last period.

games, according to statistics re
leased today by Coach John Lewis.
Don Hoy has a king-sized grasp
on honors in four departments.
The senior guard from Newberg
has 138 points for first place, is
second in rebounds with 101, is
second in free throw accuracy
among the regulars, .845 and sec
ond in field goal accuracy among
the first tcamers, .378.
Willamette, splitting its first
Northwest conference scries with
Linfield, will go into action again
Friday night at home against Pa
cific, then will return the favor
by playing at Pacific Saturday.
Neil Causbie, seven inches taller
than Hoy, Is second with 121 points
and has claimed the most re
bounds, 164. The senior center has

mark with a smart 30 out of 34
(.883). He has scored 112. Keith
Driver, reserve guard, actually
has the best chanty percentage,

As a team, Willamette, with t
6-4 record, has a per-game aver
age of 69.3 compared to opponents'
66.5. Opponents have been out-
shooting the Bearcats from the
floor, .350 to .348, but Willamette
free throw shooting is tops, .725
to .624. Personal fouls are about
even, 180 to 181.

North Salem earned a rest tues-
day night when its basketball game
at Beaverton was postponed be
cause of icy roads in the Port
land area.
Clay Egelston, athletic director,
said it will be made up Jan. 29,
an ooen Tuesday night.
Last night found two viRings ill
with the flu Jim Litchfield and
Val Barnes and another needing
rest for a foot injury Dennis Mc
Kee. This had no bearing on the
postponement, Egelston added.
North's next game is here Friday

varsity basketball team will try to
win its fifth game at 8 p.m. today
against Clark Junior college. The
game will be played in the Hud
son's Bay high school gym at Van
couver, Wash.
Coach Jerry Long's greenies
have lost only to the Surroz Mo
tors Ramblers, current leaders in
the Salem City league, by two
points.
Long said his starting lineup will
be as follows:

ing a three-way tie for first place
in that league with two other
teams only a half-game behind.
Benson, ranked No. 3 in the
first Associated Press poll of the
season, was spilled by Lincoln,
53-50. Jefferson, ranked No. 6 in
the state, was downed by Wash
ington, 59-54.
That left Jefferson, Roosevelt
and Benson deadlocked at 3-1.
Lincoln and Grant are close be
hind at 2-1.
