Driver Billed I
For Damage to
County Bridge
The matter of calling upon mo
torists who damage county bridges
to foot the bill for the repairs came
up in Marion county court deliber
ations Wednesday after Engineer
John Anderson had sent an item
ized statement to such an individ
ual. Explaining that the bill was the
first of its kind to pass over his
desk. Judge Rex Hartley asked
if the procedure was new
Anderson replied that the state
higbway department had had such
a policy for a number of years.
The question of identifying the of
fender is the principal obstacle in
collecting damages.
In the matter under considera
tion all of the railing of a 20-foot
span was torn out by the impact
of the automobile, necessitating
considerable financial outlay on
the part of the county to make
repairs.
The license number of the ve
hicle was used to determine the
owner. The bridge was located on
the Turner-Marion road.

Secretary of State Mark Hatfield
says the mistako was discovered
in time to correct It in all but
about 100 copies.
Those 100 copies are the ones
that were distributed in advance
to newspapers.
