"1 haven't been out of bed this early for II days," some sleepy-eyed students re marked. Christmas presents and vacation fun were conversation topics for classmates who hadn't seen each other since school was excused. Another year has started complete with New Year s resolu tions and needless to say, home work. Registration Begins Registration for the second se mester occupied the home room periods this week and will be con tinucd throughout next week Courses will remain the same for the vast majority of students, hut the beainning of another semester does affect English selections be cause of elective opportunities ir this category. Workshops also will change. Home management will become family relations, busi ness principles pupils will study business law. A new reading course and personal typing com plete the half semester courses offered. Graduation requirements are 15 units earned from the 10th to 12th grades or 19 units including those acquired in Ihe 9th grade. One unit is received for a subject taken an hour per day for a year. In order to graduate each student must have three credits in both English and physical education, and one each in U. S. history. American problems, and a labora tory science. Elective English courses may be laken by juniors and seniors re ceiving a "B" average in regular English. Included arc debate, jotinalism, drama, public speak ing. and creative writing. Entirely new next fall will be a college preparation English course empha sizing the short theme, long term paper, note taking, basic reading techniques, and study habits. . 9th Graders Also Register Principal Carl Aschenbrcnner talked to Leslie ninth grade pupils about their high school program for the next three years, Wednes day morning. Basic vocational courses, valu able to those students expecting to terminate their education with high school were outlined. For those planning to attend college. an effective preparation plan was suggested. Aschenbrcnner told the ninth graders the amount of application that would be expected of them in high school and discussed the details of organizing a well-rounded program to meet their needs. New Bus Arrives A new bus direct from Detroit, Michigan has arrived. This bus was made possible by a group of students, alumni and friends who donated the money for it. The bus will be rotated between the three routes of Salem, Dallas, and Tal bot. It will be taken to games and on music trips. The Book of Golden Deeds award, awarded by the Exchange club of Salem, was given to Mr. J. Henry Turnidge. president of Sa lem Academy. He was given this award for his services to youth and Ihe humble Christian spirit in which he carried these services out. His many services include work with the Sundav School un ion, work with boys paroled to him from MacLaren school for boys. and his services as president of Salem Academy. But for most of the students, Thursday all too soon ended their two week Christmas vacation. With the merriment of New Year past, the seniors and juniors are work ing in earnest on their 5.000 word term paper to have it complete by the 24th of the month. . Student Council Meets Last Wednesday, the Student Council met at Sacred Heart to plan the social calendar for the coming year. Council members from Serra atending the meeting were Dan Ritter , Jerry Brown, and David Schmidt. C.D.A. Formal One of the many activities dur ing the Christmas holidays was the annual Junior Catholic Daugh ters' formal. The C.D.A. dance en titled "Mid-Winter Dream" was held at the Knights of Columbus hall. Music featured 'Urs" Wolfer and his orchestra. Around fifty couples enjoyed this corsage for mal event. The dance was held on the night of the 28th of December from 9 to 12 p.m. The hall was decorated in a winterland park scene with a shrine to the Blessed Virgin along the southeast corner of the hall. Assembly Contest Planned Plans for an assembly contest during the month of February were announced bv student council president, Gene Griepentrog, to day. The contest will consist oi class assemblies, presented by each class on the four successive Fridays. Each class assembly will be judged by the student council and the faculty. The class that is voted to have put on the best as sembly will receive a cash prize from the student council. The Sigma Lambda Chapter of the National Honor Society at North Salem recently selected 23 seniors as initiates for the organi zation. Induction ceremonies will be held Thursday, January 10th at the school. Qualifications for membership in the Society are scholarship, char acter, leadership and service. Final selection of the students who are to become members was made by the faculty. Working to make the second semester a success socially, the inter-school council met Wednes day afternoon. Representatives from Serra and Sacred Heart iron ed out any of the two schools' con Hiding dates or plans. Joint acti vities to be sponsored were also decided upon. Sister M. Jean Eloise and Rev. Christian Mondor, O.F.M. advise the group. Chester Perry's musical comedy "Miss Caruthers Returns" is the selection to be presented by the Academy February 6 and 7. The play is under the direction of Sis ter Regina Mary, and Sue Gooding is production manager. Tryouts were held just before vacation, and practive got underway Wednesday for the seniors who have leading parts. Top roles went to Eloise Corey, Marlenc Burton, Sally Joseph, Janice Ebner, Sue Watson, Jackie Doerflcr, Janice Dabler, Vickie Schmidt, Nancie Evans, Dorothy Rupp, Pat Kindcl, Brenda Davison, Gloria Koch and Janet Larson. Members of the Cecelians and some of the Treble Triad will com plete the cast. . Both educational and enjoyable was the film "Ivanhoe," which the student body viewed this after noon. The joint English classes sponsored the movie. The Cecelians travel to Portland Wednesday, January 9, to sing for the Orcgcii Federation of Music. The only junior federated ' choral group in Oregon, they are invited to present a half-hour program. The girls will be accompained on the trip by Sister Regina Mary.
