Take a look over my shoulder as I squint into the crystal ball. Here arc my exclusive predictions "l ol things to come in 1957 predictions that have proved 85 per cent fallible. No relief is in sight for the vic tims ot lonse atiltis. Movies W1U UK lulled Ih.m ever. Mav- Liiibe not as long toe rtiOM as "The 10 Com m a n d ments." But you'll be seeing more three hour films. This will be the year of deci sion for Elvis Presley. The squirmer has a big juvenile fol lowing, but the teen-agers are no toriously fickle fans. Treslcy will have to convince the adult audi ence that he has talent. This is a monumental task. The standard film idols the Holdens, Coopers, Stewarts, Lan caster, have nothing to worry about. Their earning power will continue undiminished, partly due to lack of competition. The studios have failed to build up rivals for the TV stars. The era of the big studio opera tion will fade. Only one company, Columbia, still exists under one man rule. More and more, the studios will be run by committees. with the bulk of the films made by outside producers. Efforts will be maae to break out the backlogs of films made after 1948 and put them into IV. These have been held back be cause talent unions have contracts calling for a part of the take. Producers will Do looking lor big, attention-getting subjects to copy the success of "Around the World in 80 Days." TEXAN PROVES 'GENTILITY' Big Names Frolic At $125,000 Party Edward Slurgcon Dies in Portland PORTLAND uW-Edward Tyler Sturgeon, 67, since 1921 owner and president of Morrill and Sturgeon Lumber Co., died Sunday ot cancer. He was born in Chicago and lived at Pocatcllo Idaho, before coming to Oregon. Funeral iwvices will be held Wednesday. HOLLYWOOD Ml A Texas oil millionaire last night spent $125, 000 on a party to prove that Tex ans can be genteel. However as champagne flowed like oil the party proved only that one can have as much fun in a ruffled shirt as in cowboy boots. David (Tex) Foldman, reported ly the wealthiest independent oil operator in the world, was the host for the blowout, the fanciest in Hollywood memory. Feldman, whose income Is es timated at 7 million dollars a year, said he tossed the party primarily for his wife, Jane, but admitted: "I wanted to show the world that Tcxans can compete with the best in gentility." Feldman took over Romanoff's Crown Room and Tom Douglas, noted architectural and interior designer, spent two days and $75, 000 converting it into a Delmoni co's of the early 19O0's. The party brought out some of the biggest names in the indus trial, oil, movie and department store fields. Among the guests, all of whom came attired In turn-ol-tne-cen- PEN REPAIR... Go Slow, Linda, Your Office Sweetheart's Probably Wed By DOROTHY DIX DEAR DOROTHY DIX: I'm 16 and desperately In love with co-worker ten years my senior. I don't know whether he's married or not, but by his attitude, I'd say he was definitely interested. I can t decide whether he regards me as a kid around the office, or as a potential girl friend. How can I tell? Linda. DEAR LINDA: A definite interest doesn't necessarily mean -he's free to follow it up. Perhaps . you're getting lesson No. 1 In how to tell the wolves from the lambs. While you're in a learning mood, take up tne difference between "desperate love" and a crush. The latter, I think, is your trouble. Treat the man as an office associate and nothing more. If he is available, and wants to give encouragement, he knows how! 1 - - .- alCliikj DEAR DOROTHY DIX: From first grade on Hal and I were friends. It was almost certain that we'd marry some day, but he had to marry another girl after she became pregnant. He doesn't love her. and after the baby is born he's going to leave. I love him more and more but am afraid he won't get the divorce. Lina L. DEAR LINA: The young man seems to have enough on his hands without your loving Interference. Get lost! ' DEAR DOROTHY DIX: I'm 17 and in love with two boys, one a sailor and the other a soldier. At present. I'm engaged to the soldier, but think I really love the sailor most. Mixed-Hp. DEAR MIXED UP: Don't decide until you see what the Marines and the Air Force have to offer! Break the engagement and keep looking. tury costumes, was Conrad Hil ton, the hotel tycoon, wno even wore mutton chop sideburns, Clark Gable came as the one and only Rhelt Butler. As the festivities progressed. Bing Crosby, at 52, demonstrated n mean jitterbug with 22-year-old Nancy Eiland, a Delta Airlines stewardess from Drew. Miss The headline act was Ldith Pinf, the French singer who got $7,SO0 for singing three songs. Perhaps the happiest of all cou ples on tho dance floor was Jeanne Crain and Paul Brinkman celebrating a public reconciliation of their marriage, the breakup of which earlier in the year nan made sensational headlines. "No one is happier than Jeane and I and our four children about tonight." Brinkman said One of the honored guests was Jack L. Warner, head of Warner Bros, studio, who had first shown tha movie "Giant to Feldman, The wealthy Texan objected to a scene in the movie which showed millionaire Texans as boisterous fun lovers Bv 2 a.m. of Jan. 1. 1957, when the party started dwindling the movie looked pretty authentic. DEAR DOROTHY DIX: The man I love is an army career man, married but separated from his wife, who, by the way, is his third. He claims he's geting a divorce, but doesn't know when. Should I wait until ho has legally separated from his wife before I continue dating him, or try to forget him altogether? I feel that either way I'm going to get hurt. Gertie. DEAR GERTIE: You're a wise girl to realize that you'll get battle scars no matter how the romance turns out. Which is better, a hurt that will last the rest of your life, or a bit of heartache that will end very soon? To come down to fundamentals, the choice is between right and wrong. I hope you won't hesitate. DEAR DOROTHY DIX: I'm an atractive girl of 16. I don't go out on many dates, not because I'm not asked, but because I'm too fussy about boy friends. I don t want to sound snobbish, but I was brought up in a rather high society and like escorts who arc pleasant in looks and personality. Do you think this is a poor trait that I must correct, or is it all right? Clarice. DEAR CLARICE: At least you're completely honest with me and yourself. I should think that in your 16 years you'd have seen and read enough to realize that "high society" is not the standard by which people are rated at least in this country. Better become well acquainted with the Social Register: It may be the only companion you'll have in later years, unless you learn to evaluate people at their true worth.
