Beiiiniiiiiir Writer Asks How
To Got His Novol Piihlislieil
By DOROTHY DIX
Dear Dorothy Dix: I have noucht advice from many on this problem,
hut gi't no satisfaction. An a last resort I'm coming to you: the most
I can lose Is a three-cent stamp. I have written a novel that was ap
proved by aijcnts but they haven't been able to interest publishers.
Could 1 Ret someone interested enough to invest in my book, and
have it published and promoted at my expense? I need money des
perately and have faith in this bok. M.b.
DKAK M. B.: If your story Is good, it will win recognition through
rrgular channels. Firms that publish at the author's eipense do not
guarantee that the author will get his money back, and cases In which
this happens, with socalled "vanity" publishers, are eitremely rare.
Interesting a private Investor In a hook Is a hopeless proposition.
Why not try fiction mogazlaes? Your ageat, tf he's a good one,
should be able to suggest some outlets. If you have no success with
novel, write short stories, which are much easier to sell.
I can't do a Pollyanna act over your prospects: success In the flc ,
tion field Is rarely achieved through one book. Behind every best-seller
there are usually years of hard work and patient pushing.
Sorry to be discouraging, hut raising false hopes would be cruel.
DKAfl DWtOTHY DIX: My girl friend once went with the boy I
date. She still takes a proprietary interest in him, cutting in at dances,
sitting in the front seat if we're both in the car with him, asking him
lo carry her compnet, etc. Do you think he senses that she wants him
bnck?
KKAH IIAItl.KNK: He'd be pretty obtuse not lo see It! Ask hint
polnthlnnk If he'd prefer lo have hrr bark. Don't continue as a foil for
the girl. You desrrve a more dignified spot.
DKAlt DOItOTHY DIX: Do you have any information regarding
employment for women in out-of-town places, or traveling? Carol
DKAlt CAKOI.: What you need Is a very Informative book. "How
to get a Job That Takes you Traveling." Harlan I'ubllratioas, of Green
lnn. New York, Is the publisher. The cost Is fl.50.
DEAR DOItOTHY DIX: The boy I'm going with Is five years old
er than I. We're not keeping steady company, though some people
week days at 8:15 a m. excepting I think we are He has older Ideas, a sreat deal of conceit, and sometime
on the first Kriday and the first shows little respect for other people. I like him. but would like to know
Saturday of the month when how to ston seeing him without hurting his feelings. Eula

of others; why have so much concern over his? I doubt If he'U be much

DEAR DOROTHY DIX: My husband's ex-wife refuses to let him see
his daughters, aged 17 and 20, except in her presence. Hubby insists
on abiding by this decision. These visits usually consume a whole day
and include many holidays. He pays very handsome support lor the
