Large Library Across the entrance lobby Is the school library, a large, well light ed room with n smaller, glass-en closed work room where student committees on special group as signments may confer In research projects. This room will serve as an oflicc for the librarian. Also included In this unit is the stor age room for audio-visual equip ment. The classroom wing is the larg est single unit of the plant with provisions made for further CNten- sion should increased enrollment demand more facilities. Knch classroom is a self-contained unit consisting of a large central room, one wall of which is almost en tirely of glass, two walls, featur ing framed gypsum bulletin hoards and the third, devoted to black hoard space. At the rear of the room, separated from the class by a glass partition, is a teacher student conference room with stor age cupboards. Here special group projects may be pursued or con ferences may be held without ne cessitating the teacher abandoning the overall supervision of the main class. Each room features a beamed acoustical Mile ceiling, a storage counter wall with sink and drink ing fountain and each has its own individual color scheme. Pastel colors, in practical washable fin ishes, are used with harmonizing tones in the .counter tops and Idc floors. The rooms on the wester ly side of the corridor command a view of the valley and city while the ones on the opposite side of the wing face North Church street, Loekeri Provided The entire length of the class room corridor Is lined with lock ers for student use and the hall ways throughout feature sound deadening features to lessen traf fic noises. Also included In the classroom wing is the science room, with a small greenhouse attached, for use of the 7th and 8th grade class es in general science study and laboratory work. Directly in front of the main entrance lo complete the "X" type floor plan layout, is the corridor lo the cafeteria and gymnasium. These two parts of the plant arc also accssibie from the outside lo provide for service deliveries to the school cafeteria and to ad mit students from the play areas to the lavatory accomodations in the gym. En route to the cafeteria-gymnasium Is the large quarters of the combination homemaking and al lied arts dual-purpose room. Even tually there will be a portable partition between one end of the room which will contain the do mestic science equipment and the other end with a balcony storage loll which will be the location of the power equipment and work tables of the manual arts depart ment. The latter course will fea ture, according to the school spokesman, a wide variety of handcraft subjects with work in leather, metals, plastics and even tually a kiln for ceramics firing. ine cafeteria will be one of the features of the school, the stu dents of which have heretofore had lo use the cafeteria of the Eu gene Field grade school. The gov ernment menu restrictions of the latter were not particularly suit ed to the tastes of the older stu dents. While the Mark Twain cafeteria will be able to obtain government assistance on the market for foodstuffs, the re quirements with regard to menus and condiments available for use with the age level of the students at the school will permit a more flexible plan of food selection and prepa ration. Cleanup will be easier with a disposal unit next to the receiv ing window for trays. A pre-rinse sink is between the disposal and the large institutional-type dish washer and sterilizer. The kitchen unit also boasts, in addition to a dry storage room, a walk-in cool er and deep freeze, fcasy access , to the enclosed and ventilated re ceptacle for refuse located at the service entrance, is another handy feature of the department. The students will eat at drop down tables and benches located on the stage of the auditorium gym which is just past the cafe teria. The gymnasium, which con tinues the featuring of multi-purpose areas, is of convex ceiling construction with a pol ished hard maple floor. Beneath the stage at one end is storage space for chairs, which, when set up, can accommodate several hun dred persons when the room is used for auditorium purposes. On the same level with the gym floor is the physical education di rector's office enclosed by mesh screening from which the director can observe and supervise the gym floor and oversee the locker room as well. Modern tiled shower rooms and dryoff rooms, separate for boys and girls, are next to the locker rooms where students may check out the gym equipment and stow away their personal belongings and clothes while they are partici pating in the physical education activities. Lavatories, done in tile and pastel enamel, are between the shower rooms and the outside so that the gym facilities may be locked off while allowing the lava tories to be opened to the play grounds. The heart of the plant, the boiler and control room is at the end of the cafeteria-gym wing and the central heating plant and elec trical controls are partitioned off from the rest of the building so that in the event of fire or ex plosion, the force would oe direc ted up and out rather than dam age the rest of the building. Also nearby and handy to the stage are small soundproof practice rooms for the use of individual band instrument practice or other rehearsals which might be dis turbing. These rooms also have an extra usefulness as dressing rooms for theatrical productions.
