Agreed Upon NEW YOI1K (fl Two of the I'mtcd States' largest steel com panies plan to nierse despite no t'ee by the Justice Department tiiat it will move promptly to block the consolidation. The Bethlehem Steel Corp., sec ond in the industry behind V. S. Steel, and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co., sixth largest, an nounced yesterday an agreement under which Bethlehem would ac quire Youngstown in exchange for Bethlehem common stock. In Washington, Atty. Gen. Her bert Browne!! immediately said the Justice Department will take prompt action in the federal courts seeking to bar the proposed merscr. Bethlehem Chairman Eugene C. Grace and J. L. Mauthe, chair man of Youngstown, announced the Justice Department had for mally advised them "it intends to sue to enjoin the proposed acquisi tion on the grounds that it would violate the antitrust laws." The proposed merger would not affect t!. S. Steel's position as largest in the industry. It would be one of the biggest in history, creatine a company with assets around 2'? billion dollars. The Justice Department for more, than two years has opposed the proposal on the grounds (hat it would tend to lessen competition. Grace and Mauthe said agree ment on final terms of the acquisi tion were not "feasible at thii time." The number of Bethlehem shares to be exchanged for Youngstown is one of these final terms still to be decided. 1 The comhined rated annual ca pacity of Bethlehem and Youngs town is 25,750.000 tons, compared with U. S, Steel's 39,215,000-ton a. capacity. Trusty Skips, Wrecks Auto KLAMATH FALLS W-A Klam ath County jail trusty who wanted to be home for Christmas was held in Bend Thursday after he wrecked a stolen automobile on Highway 58,- 95 miles north of Klamath Falls. The escapee, Gary Lawrence McKercher, 27, who was serving six months here for attempted larceny, disappeared Tuesday aft ernoon from the county law li brary In the courthouse where he was working. Sheriff Murray Britton said he posed as a. prospective buyer at an automobile agency. He told, a salesman he wanted to drive a 1954 sedan around the block to I test it. A few hours later he was pulled out of the wrecked sedan by state police. He said he was planning! to spend Christmas with his wife f: In Portland. 1 McKercher will be returned here t to face charges of auto theft and escape. ForgotHcIIid Set of Dishes On Car Motor DETROIT W-It came to Gordon Parrington like a flash. That's where he had hidden the set of dishes he was giving his wife for Christmas under the hood of his car. That too was where Canadian customs officials gathered to watch the fire, after the card hoard box containing the dishes had begun to burn. Parrington, 45, of suburban De troit said he put the dishes there so his wife wouldn't find them. He said he had forgotten about them as he drove yesterday a cross the Ambassador Bridge to Windsor. Ont., on"lhe Canadian shore of the Detroit Biver. After the blaze was put out. Parrington had to pay customs penalties for not declaring the dishes. The penalties, said cus toms men. were "just enough to ruin his Christmas."
