Although the room contained on ly statues, the princess was more worried than ever. Sudden ly there was a sound at the door. Chapter Kight MYSTKKY KXPLAINED When we heard the sound the door, Princess Anne sat and blew out Santa's light. "Hide! We must hide!" "Now, child." said Santa gently. 'I do not think the king is as bad as you think. Let us greet him if this is he at the door. "No, no! We must hide!" She pressed her fingers so fiercely into my arm I, too. be came frightened. I expect Santa felt the same for lie whispered, "Very well, Let's get behind the window curtains and watch from there." Quickly we hid ourselves in the i thick velvet curtains that covered the windows from ceiling to floor, Jt was easy to peep out from the deep folds of the curtains. All this time there had been the strange scratching at the door. Now we heard a key turning in the lock. Slowly the door swung open and a hooded man shuffled into the room. He held a lighted candle in his hand. He turned at the door and said. "Come. Whiskers. Walk briskly for who knows when you will walk again!" I looked down and saw a tiny kitten who would not move. At last the king picked it up and carried it to the table, Dark Eyes Glittered He swung the hood back from his head and revealed his face and now I knew why the princess had been afraid. For though the face seemed kind enough, the darting eyes glittered strangely. The princess is right! He is a king to fear!" I thought. I reached1 out to hold her hand. But she stood there staring at her father. Her hands were in tight fists and she seemed not to feel me at all. Now the king opened a book. As he read directions from it, he took down bottles and jars from the shelves. Carefully he mea sured powders and liquids and ointments into a bowl. Then he stirred. As he stirred he talked to Whiskers, the cat. All Turns to Gold I "This is Formula 23," he said with a twisted smile. "And you are lucky, Whiskers, because 1 HiinL- I hie ,ll Kn t,r nnn 11. ..I Inside up J? ii, DICKENS' CLASSIC Two TV Networks to Present Viewers With Same Yule Gift He poured (he liquids Into will be the first works and you Golden tot. The kitten crouched beside the bowl and meowed soitly. "And after that." cried the king,, "why. everything I touch with my secret mixture will turn to gold." He stirred his strange potion faster and faster. He beat it with pestle and twirled it furiously under his thumbs. And all the time he talked to it, pleading with it, commanding it, to be the mixture he desired. Finally, there was only a dust in the bowl. The king reached in with his hand and drew out a handful. Turning, he hurled the mixture into the kitten's eyes and cried, "Turn to gold, Whiskers! Turn to gold!" The kitten leaped back, shud dered violently and then, before our astonished eyes, turned, not to gold, but to stone. At that very moment mere was a cry at my side and Princess Ann flew out of the curtains and threw herself' at the king. You're Not The King' 'You're not my father I You're not the king!" Before the startled creature could raise his hands she reached up with her fingers and tore at his face. Off the face came in her By ROB THOMAS bowl. a mask of her father, It was the king. Princess Anne turned away and pointed at the statue of a man standing behind her. "This is my f a t h c r," she moaned. "Like the kitten, you changed him to stone!" Tomorrow: The Sorcerer By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) For Christmas two TV networks are unabashedly handing viewers the identical present musical ver sions of the Charles Dickens' classic. "A Christmas Carol." At the demand of fans. CBS-TV is running for the third season us so-minute filmed musical ver sion of the famous story. Fredric March and Basil Rathbone are stars of the presentation Thursday evening. And, as if one good show calls for another. NBC-TV is staging the same Dickens story on Dec, 23 also as a musical. If this show looks familiar, it may be because Basil Kathbone, the Ma- ley s ghost in the CBS version, will be seen as Scrooge. The NBC musical, re-named "The Stingiest Man in Town," also will star real singers Pa trice Munscl, Vic Damone and Johnny Desmond. The CBS show was made two years ago by producer-director Ralph Levy, who took the idea to the network because he wanted to try something more serious than his Jack Benny program. He gra ciously says he doesn't mind that NBC is musicalizing " Christmas Carol," too. "More power to 'em," he said. "We've been doing our . version longer. Besides, I'm sure they'll have a different treatment. 1 must say I don't approve of popular singers for the classics. Damone and Desmond are good but I wouldn't fool with the classics that way. Our version is more like an operetta." The idea of setting Dickens' Dickens' story to music at first appalled the purists. Atteer the first CBS showing of "A Christ mas Carol" on "Showers of Stars" the sponsor raked in "several thousand letters." Some were laudatory, others complaining. "But the rating was good so the show was run again last year, and we received even more letters of praise," Levy said. "This year the sponsor got many letters (rom viewers wanting to know if the show would be repeated again this season." I GOT THE IDEA FROM THENEWARDEM yTwiw pakHAIF GALLON!
