Salem, Oregon, Wednesday, December 12, 1956 38 Jailed as New Violence Grips Poland WARSAW m New anti-government violence was reported in Poland Wednesday in the wake of the mob attack on the Soviet con sulate at Stettin. Eighty-eight per sons, many of them youths, were reported jailed for the Stettin riot. Trybuna Ludu, official organ of the Polish United Workers (Com munist I Party, disclosed a crowd attacked a police building in Olecko, a town near the north eastern city of Bialystok. The Communist paper reported that crowds demolished municipal offices at Nowy Ciechocinek in the northern midlands. Other demonstrators beat up a local Communist Party secretary at Nieszawa, in the same district. The paper added: "More such Incidents can be reported." Poland's nationalist Communist government, seeking to avert any repetition of the Soviet military intervention in Hungary, sped an apology to the Soviets for the at tack on the Russian consulate in the outburst at Stettin Monday night. Gates Selected South Salem High January Rotarian Senior class president Boh Gates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will K. Gates, 1034 Howard St., was chosen by student council mem bers Tuesday as South Salem high's Rotarian for January, 1957. The choice was made at an early date because Christmas vacation excludes the last council meeting of December. Gates' is president of "A" choir, a varsity football letterman, and a member of the Saxon wrestling team. He also serves as president of National Athletic Scholarship society, and is a member of Claude Kells Hi-Y, Varsity "S" club, and National Honor society. (Capital Journal Photo) ITU Proposals Beaten in Vote INDIANAPOLIS Ul The In ternational Typographical Union said Wednesday its 100,000 print ers and mailers have defeated proposals to raise basic union dues and strike defense fund as sessments. Two other constitutional amend ments approved in the mail refer endum give the Executive Coun cil jurisdiction over new work pro cesses and revise ITU's delegate strength in the AFL-CIO and Ca nadian Labor Congress. ITU headquarters said the pro posal to raise basic international dues from si to si.50 a montn was defeated 38,996 to 37,497. The proposal to raise the defense fund assessment from of 1 per cent of earnings to l'i per cent was defeated, 42,513to 34,069. The higher assessment was in tended to build up a defense fund of 5 to 10 million dollars. Judge Clears Parolee Sloat CORVALLIS (UP) Cloy A Sloat, who spent 33 of his 64 years in Oregon state prison, today won his fight to keep from being re turned to confinement under e revocation of parole. Benton County - Circuit Judge Fred McHenry ruled that Sloat had paid his debt to society on two convictions of attempted rape. In ordering Sloat freed, Judge McHenry said two life terms that were meted against Sloat June 22, 1922, by Marion county Circuit Court were imposed under a law ruled unconstitutional by the Ore gon Supreme Court in 195.1. Sloat was sentenced to two life terms to run concurrently for the attempted rape of two girls. The high court ruled that the sentence of life for attempted rape was un constitutional since it was a great er penalty than the 20-year maxi mum sentence set for the more serious crime of rape. Rehearing of Case Denied Petition for rehearing of a case originally heard in Marion county was denied Tuesday by the state supreme court. The rehcanne was a?ked by Keith and Margaret Phillips who had sued Arcy Podrabsky and others. Dr. Brooks paid particular trib ute to local women's groups who nave "adopted ' eight of the wards in the hospital, rendering personal service to the patients, with great benefit to them, much greater than anyone hoped for when the project was initiated. "I wish we could have all our wards "adopted" in this way," he said. The doctor said that while Ore gon looks upon itself as progres sive and enlightened, its suicide rate is either fourth or fifth among the -48 states, and its di vorce rate is twice the national average. "However we rate 46th in consumption of alcohol, Califor nia second," he remarked with a smile. Asked during a question period whether the institution has more men or women patients among its nearly 3500, the doctor said the numbers are about 50-50. Entry was made by raising a rear window. A pane was re moved from the door to the prin cipal's office to unlock the door and gain entry there. S. mar shals office on a charge of trans porting a stolen car across a state line. Leroy Mathews Caldwell, who gave an address in Currv. Pa.. was arrested by city police after finding him to be in possession of a 1938 Chevrolet reported stolen from the Boeing Aircraft Co. park ing lot in Seattle. The car's igni tion had been wired around, offi cers said. 1 The arrest came after officers were called by s service station attendant Tuesday morning when Caldwell attempted to sell him an automobile' wheel. Federal authorities said Caldwell attempted to sell him an automo bile wheel. Federal authorities said Caldwell would be prosecuted under the Dyer act. He has admitted some previous felony convictions, they said. A man arrested with Caldwell was released from the city jail Wednesday morning after he was given a five-day suspended sen tence in municipal court on a va grancy charge. James Leon Vest. Stockton, Calif., told officers he had been hitchhiking to California when Caldwell picked him up near Canby. Poultry Disease Official in City For Conference The chief of the poultry disease section, animal disease eradica tion branch, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Richard E. Omo hundro was in Salem for a con ference with state and federal vet erinary officials on eradicating poultry diseases. Dr. S. C. Garlman, epidemolo gist, was also on the trip and both men have been in Oregon familiarizing themselves with the poultry situation in this state. Appointed last July shortly after the USDA poultry disease section was created, Omohundro said,. the federal department had long rec ognized the need for a poultry atsease branch in Its operation. He said E. L. Peterson, former state agricultural director, helped in organizing the federal poultry disease section as an assistant Secretory of Agriculture. nothing was noted missing other than the 25 cents, deputies said. jB (jp JO Earrings in Mail Scliemc Another angle in chain letters has bobbed up at the Salem post of fice. This time earrings are involved and the person who carries out all instructions will receive 36 pairs of the ear ornaments. The customary warning against breaking the chain is contained in the letter which says that the com munication is not a violation of the law since no money is involved. 'It is still a chain letter and as such is a violation of postal reg ulations, ' remarked Postmaster Gragg. Commission Tells Policy for Wine Wholesale Culs Changes in the Oregon liquor control commission's wine regula tions effective Dec. 14 provide that OLCC will not approve price cuts at the wholesale level unless the lower price is "economically sound within the industry and not designed to render financial as sistance to retailers." The amended regulation, com mission officials said, followed several month's study after appli cation for the new rule had been filed by wholesalers to sell about 70 per cent of the wine gallonage consumed in Oregon. The commission said intent of the amendment is to prevent a wholesaler from cutting prices to sell wine as a loss leader in order to induce retail customers to buy the brand of malt beverages he offers for sale and to prevent temporary price reductions offered only to force competition out of business. i Legitimate close-outs at reduced prices of brands which the whole saler no longer wishes to sell are not restricted by the amend ment. Slate Hospital Escapee Free A stale hospital escapee who has been accused of killing his wife was still free Wednesday, state po lice reported. . Willie Moore, 66, Portland, es caped Tuesday morning by fleeing from a passageway while helping an attendant move another patient between wards. lie was sent to the hospital in June 1955 upon being adjudged mentally ill after the shooting of his wife. He is not considered dan gerous, authorities said. S. A. Aided By Golf Club The Salvation Army Christmas fund will benefit from a special Salem Men's Golf club event Sat urday and Sunday which will pro vide turkeys as prizes. ' Donating 15 to 20 turkeys will be Dr. Roy Reynolds, who ex plained that he is grateful for what the Salvation Army did for sol diers of World War I and he and other officers felt they would like to aid the Salem battalion. Checks may be given to Frank Ward, SMG club president, or to Bunny Ma son, pro. 1 Murder Confessions Californian Says He's Slayer of 11 Persons SAN FRANCISCO (UP)-Police of three cities today tried to pick out the truth in the tangled con fessions of a smirking killer who has admitted five murders and cb's six others. i . the past 10 days, Stephen Nash, a 33-year-oid truck driver, has claimed he killed 11 Califor nians to get revenge on a society that sent him to prison. But police from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland said they are wary of Nash's claims, which if true, would make him the blood iest killer in California history. The fact that Nash has demand ed $1,000 for details on his latest boasts indicate the tall, saturnine truck driver is "enjoying all this immensely," San Francisco Police Inspector Al Neldcr said, "He's cunning and he's calcu lating and in a' happy frame of mind," Nelder said. "But before I believe him, I'd make hin prove these last six." Nash was picked up In Los An geles 10 days ago in connection with an assault charge. He served lime in San Quentin Prison from 1948 to 1954 on a robbery charge and six months last year in Ala meda County jail lor battery. He also has a history of sex perver sion. Instead of routine pleas of inno cent, Nash unexpectedly made ap palling confessions to Uie murders of two Southern Californians, one of whom was a 10-year-old boy, and the murders of persons in San Francisco, Sacramento and Ala meda County. Alameda County police are still investigating his confession of the murder of William Burns, 23, a transient whose body was found floating in San Francisco Bay last December.
