HOLLYWOOD
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD un-A star at S,
retired at 13, Luana Patten is
making a comeback at 18, and do
ing right nicely, thanks.
Luana is the lovely Long Beach,
Calif., lass who
starred in Walt
Disney films of
a decade ago
such as "Song
of the South"
and "So Dear to
My Heart." She
and Bobby Dris
coll were the
first human ac
tors put under
contract by Dis- ecu thosms
ney when he turned to live action
films.
For five years, she and Bobby
went to school on the Disney lot,
acted in films and toured the
country to help sell them. She did
some radio and TV, then came to
a wise decision.
"I was getting by in my stud
ies," she said, "but it was hard
to break off from acting and go
do my lessons. I figured the im
portant thing was (or me to get
an education without any outside
interference. Then if I still want,
cd to be an actress, I could come
back to it."
So hse left her career at 13 and
went back to school. Last June
she graduated Irom Woodrotv Wil
son High School in Long Beach
and notified her agent she was
ready to work. Within a matter
of days, she was signed to star
in "Rock, Pretty Baby" at Universal-International
and "Johnny

What's more, U I liked her so
much in "Rock" that her option
was picked up and she was signed
to a term contract. Now she's
playing opposite Jock Mahoney in
"Joe Dakota."
Of all the former child stars I
have gnown. Luana is the most
level-headed. She has an uncom
mon amount of common sense for
girl of 18, and I believe her re
turn to a nonmovia life had much
to do with that, .
Most kids who grow up In the
movie business are pawed and
pampered so they never grow up
in a normal existence. As a result,
they become immature adults
with multiple marriages and much
tinhappincss.
"1 think it was good that I
stayed out of pictures while 1 was
growing up," she said. "When I
came back, they could see that I
was grown up and wouldn't think
of me in little-girl roles."
Yes, Indeed, there Is no doubt
that our Luana has grown up. A
cheesecake session in the photo
gallery provides ample evidence.
She still shows no tendency to
go Hollywood. When she's not
working, she hustles home to Long
Beach. And when she is working,
she docs no dating.
