Salem, Oregon, Monday, December 3, 1956 EXERCISE REFRESHES Rest Not Remedy for Fatisfue in Oldsters o By RENNIE TAYLOR Associated Press Science Reporter SEATTLE m - Fatigue is the greatest obstacle to a happy, use. ful life for oldsters and its best antidote is physical activity, even when one feels tired, a specialist in the treatment of the aging asseriea Saturday. He is a member of the association's committee on agmg. ''Over and over again," he said, "It has been demonstrated that physical activity at the end of a trying but sendentary day brings a degree of refreshment and re newed energy that nothing else can eaual." The activity should be some- uiuig a person lines, such as golf, swimming, hiking, gardening or tennis. Dr. Klumpp added, and should not be overdone. "Too much exercise, as well as too much rest, can defeat its own purpose," the physician said. Fatigue, Dr. Klumpp asserted, is more than just tiredness. It-is felt as a vague physical, emotion al and mental depression often marked by loss of mental sharp ness, impariment of memory and perception, loss of visual acuity, changes' in heartbeat, muscular weakness and shakincss. When disease is present fatigue is nearly always there, too, and the physician should look care fully for any signs of underlying trouble. But if there is nothing seriously wrong, physical activity is in order, Dr. Klumpp said. Tobacco and alcohol, even when not used excessively, are' possible causes of fatigue but a doctor should be cautious about cutting off these and other pleasures of the oldster. Sometimes their con tinued use can do more good than abstention, the specialist assert ed. Overweight in another con tributing cause. ' Both doctor and patient should remember, Dr. Klumpp said, that fatigue is a normal part of life and that everybody should be able to tolerate some of it. There should be counter-measures, he said, when it becomes out of pro portion to one's age or way of lite.
